no class diy tattoo | From T Bone Letter 42

,

no class diy tattoo

T-Bone is a massively-built spiritual ex-Marine, who uses fighting skills to stop prison rape. T-Bone’s latest letter:

Here in supermax, some of the guards are decent people. They walk around with face shields because there are guys who throw human waste on them and each other, and some guys spit on them. This place is full of cell warriors, guys who talk and scream and yell at each other from their cells, which we are never allowed out of except to take showers.

There are times when the smells are nothing but human excrement from the open waste pond. It lasts for hours. The opposite of that stink is the smell of the officers food nuked in the microwave. Compared to the food they feed us, the smell of real food makes my mouth water and guys start asking the guards for some of whatever smells so good.

Cockroaches are everywhere. They come out night and day. They get into all of our stuff everything.

Supermax is tough, but Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s jail is a much bleaker place. I thought things would be smoother after the jail, but I ended up at Alhambra Unit – where Arizona Department of Corrections determine your custody level – in a cell with a crazy guy. He wouldn’t sit still or leave the guards alone, making comments about female officers. He was always yelling at people outside the cell, trying to make himself out to be tough, but it was all an act.

Some guys at Alhambra Unit were so scared senseless of prison and wanted to be protected that they said they were gay or started acting gay, so they wouldn’t go to the general population. There was so much fear and hate. People were lost in a sea of discouragement. There was nothing but sitting and waiting as we were being tested and watched.

homemade tattoo removal recipe | The Rash Under The Ring

,

homemade tattoo removal recipe

No, you’re not allergic to marriage. That rash under your wedding band — or any ring — is simply your skin’s reaction to an irritant. It happens when you wear a ring all the time, such as a wedding band.

There are two common reasons for ring rash:
  1. Some people develop an allergic reaction to the nickel in the band. Even if your band is made of gold, almost all rings have a small amount of metal alloys, like nickel, to help them maintain their sturdy structure during normal wear.
  2. Your skin could be irritated from washing your hands without taking your ring off. Soap particles can get trapped between the band and your skin, causing irritation. This is often called “detergent burn.” Additionally, harsh soaps can strip the natural oils from your skin, leaving it raw and irritated. This can be compounded by dry skin in colder months when there isn’t as much moisture in the air. Those with a history of sensitive skin, eczema, allergies or atopic dermatitis are more prone to this reaction.

Luckily, you can take some measures to help combat this skin irritation:
  • If you don’t feel like removing your ring every time you wash your hands, you can invest in a lotion that contains ceramides, which are lubricants that moisturize and protect the skin. If you apply the lotion to your hands after washing, it can help alleviate detergent burn.
  • If you are concerned that you are allergic to nickel, painting the inside of your ring with clear nail polish can create a protective barrier between the band and your skin. But don’t worry, the polish won’t damage your precious metal!

If these remedies don’t work at home, we encourage you to seek out a doctor’s opinion. For more information about ADSCA and our services, click here to visit our website.

diy tattoo artist | Social Media Platform Policy Do you have one

,

Social Media Platform Policy: Do you have one?
by Robert Tornabene

So you are your Organizations Social Media Manager? So have you thought through how you will address content posted to one of your Social Media Platforms? Do you have criteria? Is there a procedure or practice in place to address issues such as sales, promotions, solicitations or inappropriate content? How do you make that policy available to your follows, fans, and posters to you platforms? These are all questions that all need to be addressed in order to have a well rounded and safe approach to your organizations Social Media Platforms.

Any Organization utilizing Social Media should have clear guidelines laid out and available to the public. These guidelines would address issues that followers, likers, or users to your Social Media Platforms would need to abide by. They provide standards of conduct, which in the event an issues were to arise for specific types of behavior you can address them.

You first should define what your Organizations Social Media Policy defines, what is acceptable, what is not. A Social Media Manager should plan to routinely post a link to their Social Media Policy. These posts should be across all your Social Media Platforms.

What your Social Media policy should have.
  1. It should identify your Organization, as well as your current and active Social Media Platforms.
  2. It should define who to contact regarding your Social Media Platforms. Examples would include your Public Relations/Public Information Officer, Social Media Manager or Freedom of Information Officer.
  3. The Social Media Policy should include key policy issues, Terms of Use, Prohibited Content and Disclaimer.
  4. A small section should also be about links and validity of links. However, it is inherint on the Social Media Manager to check the link to determine if the connected content is not a link

Terms of Use (TOU)

Terms of Use are those areas which define purpose, platform, contact and type of information to be disseminated.

  • This should include identifying the the purpose of the of your Social Media Platforms. For Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, Local Governments, and Non Governmental Organizations the primary function will be as a communication too.
  • The TOU may include terms such as raising awareness and information for the general public in and around the community you serve.
  • TOU should indicate what types of information you plan on putting out on your Social Media Platforms. These might include public safety messages, news releases, photos, videos, Amber Alerts, road closures, power outages and other emergency announcements.
  • TOU should also indicate that all of the organizations Social Media Platforms shall comply with all applicable organization policies and procedures.

Prohibited Content:

Prohibited Content defines that all posts are monitored and subject to removal from the site when they violate the defined prohibited content.  Prohibited content can include but is not limited to:

  • Profane language or content
  • Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, marital status, familial status, national origin, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, source of income, or other protected status under applicable law
  • Inappropriate sexual content or links to inappropriate sexual content
  • Solicitations of commerce
  • Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity
  • Private and confidential information
  • Information that may tend to compromise the safety and security of the public or public systems
  • Content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party
  • Comments in support of or opposition to political campaigns or ballot measures
  • disclaims any and all responsibility and liability for any materials or content that the is deemed inappropriate for posting. The organization shall make efforts to remove said materials in an expeditious or otherwise timely manner, but disclaims liability if circumstances exist that prevent or hinder efforts to remove said materials.

Disclaimer:

A disclaimer is a defensive measure, used generally with the purpose of protection from unwanted
claims or liability.

  • The Organization does not endorse nor otherwise support or sponsor any advertising that may be posted by the Social Media host (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube) on the organization site. Facebook Page, Twitter, Pinterest and YouTube account are privately operated sites and the privacy terms of each respective site apply.

Link Re-liability & Accuracy:

Link Re-liability simply means that the link connects to its designated location. Link accuracy means that the link actually connects to the identified location, and it not a spoofed link. An example would be a link that would re-direct a user to an inappropriate internet location.

  • The organization does not guarantee the reliability or accuracy of any third-party links.

Content Removal Notice:

This is a simple statement that the organization reserves final say on any comment or interaction that violates the Social Media Policy.

Considerations

Regardless of what layout your provide or what type of format you decide to present to your users, it should be consistent, publicly available and simple understand.

In the event there is a policy violation, present to link to the person, or handle that has violated your policy. Be sure to screen capture to violation and save it before deleting it from your feed or
timeline.

Freedom of Information Act requirements in your specific state may require your organization to retain information that is posted across your Social Media Platforms. You should consult with your organizations legal counsel along with your home states Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) or Records Retention Act for clarification.

Conclusion

By following these simple guidelines organizations can reduce the impact of inappropriate content, links or posts and improve the quality of content to your fan base across all of your Social Media Platforms.

Failure to have a defined policy can result in issues such as allegations of "transparency" failures, concealment and mistrust. In addition, without defined parameters as a primer for both the individual user and the agency it opens the agency up to liability issues.

Happy posting!

diy tattoo paper australia | POLITICS Needle exchange measures approved in Indiana

,

diy tattoo paper australia

As the HIV outbreak continues in southeastern Indiana, a number of state officials have stepped up and implemented policies to combat the growing number of infections.
The most recent number of infected individuals, released by the Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday, has reached 143, with 138 confirmed cases and five preliminary positive cases of HIV.
The outbreak is reportedly caused by needle sharing among intravenous drug users who are injecting the prescription painkiller Opana.
On March 26, Gov. Mike Pence signed an executive order allowing health officials in Scott County to open a needle exchange program. Participants in the program are provided with support for substance abuse, mental health and other health-related resources upon each visit in addition to access to clean syringes and a place to deposit used needles. The program collects basic demographic information but does not require individuals to give names.
Pence’s executive order was initially a temporary measure, intended to last for only 30 days but was extended for an additional 30 days on April 20 and will last until May 24.
As of Tuesday, there have already been 166 visitors to the needle exchange center who brought in 6,494 needles to be safely disposed of and were given 7,146 needles, according to the ISDH.
In December, prior to the start of the outbreak, there was only one needle exchange program in the state, and it required drug users to give personal information before receiving clean syringes.
Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention visited Indianapolis on Monday and together with Pence traveled to Scott County to further asses the state of the outbreak.
While the temporary needle exchange program was being administered, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller urged state lawmakers to reach a deal that would establish a more comprehensive exchange program throughout the state.
“As the HIV outbreak continues to grow in Scott County, it has become abundantly clear that the Austin community — and other locations that may be at risk — need a serious, immediate solution to curb rampant needle sharing among abusers,” Zoeller said last week in a press release. “Providing clean syringes is the fastest way to halt further spread of the virus from infected individuals to non-infected ones.”
Zoeller is the co-chair of the Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, a group of 120 doctors, pharmacists, health officials, treatment providers and law enforcement. The task force has been meeting with health officials in Scott County to discuss the response efforts of the state.
Because this legislative session ends this week, the urgency to pass a measure establishing a needle exchange program was heightened. Lawmakers officially passed a measure Tuesday that would enable the implementation of a needle exchange program in counties that are struggling with hepatitis C or HIV outbreaks.
County officials would be able to have public meetings to decide whether or not to request permission from the state to create a needle exchange program. Following an official request, the state health commissioner would have 10 days to respond.
This measure also takes $500,000 from the state budget to fund additional law enforcement in areas where drug use and abuse is a significant problem.
Beth Meyerson, an assistant professor at the School of Public Health and the co-director for the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention, has vocalized the need for needle exchange programs in Indiana and concerns that need to be addressed about outbreaks such as this.
“We think about the access to needles, that’s one thing, and certainly understanding the use,” Meyerson said. “One of the questions we would ask is why are they using Opana? Were they shooting up before? Were they shooting up a cheaper substance? Understanding that sub-population and understanding what’s going on there is very, very important so that we can provide ?treatment.”
She added that she doesn’t think Indiana does a good job in providing funding to drug abuse treatment.

diy tattoo stencil without carbon paper | Memphis Dermatologist Shows Coolsculpting Before and After Photos

,

diy tattoo stencil without carbon paper

Dr. Purvisha Patel says CoolSculpting is an effective treatment for fat reduction and body contouring without surgery. The treatments target specific, stubborn areas of fat that do not respond to diet and exercise, intended for those who are at a healthy weight but just cannot seem to work off certain problem areas. Coolsculpting can be used to contour the abdomen, thighs, “love handles” and other areas. Dr. Patel shows how Coolsculpting is done and the results which can be expected in this video from a recent Memphis TV appearance.

The CoolSculpting procedure is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat. "The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting, so patients look great," says Dr. Patel. "Once the treated fat cells are crystallized  they die and are naturally processed and eliminated from the body. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good."

CoolSculpting uses cold therapy to freeze and destroy fat cells permanently, with no surgery required. The device cools just the targeted layer of fat without affecting the skin. Since fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other cells, the fat cells are destroyed without damage to surrounding tissue.

diy tattoo aftercare balm | Clemson study poor sleep habits lead to dangerous behavior

,

diy tattoo aftercare balm

CLEMSON UNIVERSITY — Poor sleep habits can have a negative effect on self-control, which presents risks to individuals’ personal and professional lives, according to Clemson University researchers.

In a study titled “Interactions between Sleep Habits and Self-Control,” Clemson psychologists concluded a sleep-deprived individual is at increased risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, inattentiveness and questionable decision-making.

“Self-control is part of daily decision-making. When presented with conflicting desires and opportunities, self-control allows one to maintain control,” said June Pilcher, Clemson Alumni Distinguished Professor of psychology, one of four authors of the study. “Our study explored how sleep habits and self-control are interwoven and how sleep habits and self-control may work together to affect a person’s daily functioning.”

Other Clemson researchers included Drew Morris, a human factors psychology Ph.D. candidate; Janet Donnelly, a Ph.D. candidate in industrial/organizational psychology; and Hayley B. Feigl, who has a Bachelor of Science in psychology.

Previous research has shown individuals working in today’s 24-hour-a-day global economy often times sleep less or at irregular times, resulting in poor sleep and chronic sleep loss, which affects decision-making.

“Exercising self-control allows one to make better choices when presented with conflicting desires and opportunities. That has far-reaching implications to a person’s career and personal life,” Pilcher said.

Poor sleep habits, which include inconsistent sleep times and not enough hours of sleep, can also lead to health problems, including weight gain, hypertension and illness, according to prior research. Studies have also found that sleep deprivation decreases self-control but increases hostility in people, which can create problems in the workplace and at home,” Pilcher said.

Better sleep habits can contribute to a more stable level of daily energy reserves, research has indicated. Availability of energy can refuel a person’s ability to make more difficult choices rather than opting for the easier choice or the easier task.

“Many aspects of our daily lives can be affected by better-managed sleep and self-control capacity,” Pilcher said. “Improved health and worker performance are two potential benefits, but societal issues such as addictions, excessive gambling and over spending could also be more controllable when sleep deficiencies aren’t interfering with one’s decision making.”

diy henna tattoo kit australia | Former Youth Return to Giddings With Thanks

,

diy henna tattoo kit australia

At a September 16 reunion at the Giddings State School, approximately 40 former Giddings youth returned to thank former and current staff who worked with them to turn their lives around and deliver a message of hope to current Giddings residents.  The reunion was an effort by Charleston White and the Hyped about HYPE (Helping Youth People Excel) Youth Outreach organization.

White was 14 when he and a group of teenagers were found responsible for the death of a man during a robbery.  He was committed to one of TJJD’s predecessor agency, the Texas Youth Commission, until his 21st birthday.  During that time, White admits that he was a difficult youth, often involved in disturbances and fights.  But he acknowledges that he was given a second chance during that time, and that the influences of the adults he interacted with daily while at Giddings was instrumental in his 180 degree turnaround.  White has since dedicated his activities to reaching out to other at-risk and incarcerated youth, encouraging them with his personal success story and the idea that it is never too late to turn your life around.

During the morning-long assembly in the Giddings gymnasium, these former youth, many of whom travelled from across Texas to be there, talked about their life-changing time at Giddings and how they were able to turn their lives around.  All speakers described familiar patterns in their lives leading up to their Giddings stay – neglected at home, a lack of empathy and respect, hanging out with the wrong crowds and an inability to connect with society.  Most acknowledged they were at Giddings for truly horrific crimes and were unable to fully grasp their true impact of their actions.  All cited their time at the Giddings campus and, more specifically the people who worked with them on a daily basis, as a pivotal period of their lives which enabled them to move forward, become mothers and fathers, and play productive roles in their communities.

The returnees also spoke directly to the staff and former staff that were assembled to hear them speak.  Nearly every speaker spoke of a specific staff member who stood with them during their incarceration, providing tough love, guidance and hope when those qualities were most needed.

Current Giddings youth also heard the HYPE message about the possibility of redemption and the importance of using their time in TJJD to develop the tools that will serve them when they return to their communities.

“It’s not too late for you,” White said.  “No one is exempt from God’s love.”

Johnathan Silver with the Texas Tribune covered the HYPE event. Read Johnathan Silver’s article at: www.texastribune.org/2015/09/27/former-juvenile-offenders-paying-it-forward/

T-Bone is a massively-built spiritual ex-Marine, who uses fighting skills to stop prison rape. T-Bone’s latest letter:

Would you believe a guard read about me at Jon’s Jail Journal! The guard turned the other way while I dealt with the guys who were out to hurt me. I went right in and hit the smallest one with a right hand. His head hit the wall. Down he went. The others just stood there for a second and that was their mistake. On a mission for God and country, I laid into them as US Marine.

These other black punks came to the door and said, “Hey, man. It’s your pod now. It’s your pod.”
“Now hear this,” I said. “Attention on deck, you jokers. If the Army and Navy ever look on heaven’s scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines.”

Now they think I am going to run the place, but I am not going to lower myself to their standards. I am not a hero. Those men and women out there working and taking care of their families and serving God are the real heroes.

Each one teach one.
Strength and honour.
Steel embrace.

easy diy tattoo removal | Many consumers fear identity theft yet still engage in risky behavior

,

easy diy tattoo removal

Experians ProtectMyID® exposes a disconnect between what people know about identity theft risks and what they actually are doing to protect themselves

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A new online survey by Harris Interactive, conducted for Experians ProtectMyID®, reveals consumers are still at high risk for identity theft, failing to practice even simple safeguards. The survey, fielded to coincide with National Protect Your Identity Week, shows the vast majority of U.S. adults (93 percent) recognize identity theft is a growing problem. Yet, 61 percent feel it would not be very difficult for a person to steal their identity and 67 percent are concerned that identity theft will affect them in the future.

The national study surveyed more than 2,000 consumers on their perceptions and activities related to identity theft. While 89 percent of online U.S. adults say they take steps to secure their digital information, more than half (55 percent) dont always check to see if a Website is secure before shopping online, and more than three out of five adults who have online accounts (63 percent) dont use a unique password for each of their online accounts.

"This survey clearly shows that, while people are more aware and concerned about identity theft, they are not doing what they should to stay protected, especially when it comes to online activities," said Ken Chaplin, senior vice president of marketing for Experians ProtectMyID. "Consumers clearly dont want to become victims, yet they continue to put themselves in danger."

The results also reveal that 92 percent of U.S. adults believe people should be more concerned about identity theft. In addition, 33 percent dont feel confident they are doing enough to protect their identities.

Additional key findings from the survey

Digital devices under-protected - U.S. adults own and use a variety of devices, but more than two in five of those who own a smartphone (43 percent) report they rarely or never use a password to unlock their smartphone. Additionally, 47 percent of adults who own a tablet indicate they rarely or never use a password to unlock their tablets.

Risky shopping - Ninety-one percent of U.S. adults shop online; however, many dont safeguard their credit card information. The survey shows that 57 percent of online shoppers dont always go to sites directly (by typing the name in their web browser), but instead click on links. This action increases the risk of going to a fraudulent site designed to capture the visitors personal information.

Social networking is too social - Among U.S. adults who have a social network profile such as Facebook and Twitter, slightly more than one in three (36 percent) manage their privacy settings on an ongoing basis. Many may be exposing themselves to fraud by allowing certain information to be public, such as educational background (60 percent), date of birth (44 percent), and email address (36 percent).

Real-world scenarios create simple dangers - Twenty-three percent of adults admit they set their purses, bags or jackets containing wallets under the table or behind them on a chair at a restaurant.

Social Security cards can put sensitive information into the wrong hands - Forty-six percent of adults write their Social Security number on job applications, medical forms, etc., and 29 percent say they carry their Social Security card (or a copy of it) in their wallet or purse.

diy eyeball tattoo | Miley Cyrus branded Irresponsible by drugs cahrity after spliff stunt

,

diy eyeball tattoo

An article published on Gigwise.com talks about Miley Cyrus behavior that by pulling out a joint on stage. This young lady is going to completely crash and burn. If someone does not get a hold of her and control her behavior, she will be either a Lindsey Lohan or worse dead!

Miley Cyrus has been slammed by anti-drugs campaigners after smoking a spliff on stage at the EMAs on Sunday (10 November, 2013).

Cyrus outraged audiences by taking a joint out of her bag when she walked out to collect the Best Video award for the Wrecking Ball.

"I couldnt fit the award in my purse but I did find this," she said reaching into her bag and removing a joint that she proceeded to smoke on stage. The show also saw her dress up in spandex and twerk with a dwarf during her anthem to teenage rebellion We Cant Stop.

Talking to the Evening Standard, David Raynes for the National Drug Prevention Alliance deemed the act completely "irresponsible." Marijuana isnt legal in the Netherlands, but the lax approach to drug laws mean that people wont be arrested for the possesion of small amounts, despite this Raynes highlighted the effect that the stunt could have on Mileys audience.

"The people she is targeting with her performance are much more vulnerable to the effects of marijuana," he tells the newspaper. "We know from research that cannabis use has more of an effect on the younger brain than the brain of a more mature person. By doing this on stage she is making it a more acceptable lifestyle choice."

Meanwhile in the rest of the world of weed news, Lady Gaga recently opened up, stating that she was completely addicted to the drug, smoking up to 20 joints in a day while recording her new album, ARTPOP. Last year she shocked her audience by lighting a spliff up during a performance in Amsterdam.

diy tattoo temp | Product Review Winter Organics Camomile Facial Cleanser

,

diy tattoo temp

A basic skin care regimen starts with a good cleanser. Facial cleansers help remove makeup, dirt, pollutants, and oils. Going to bed with clean skin is essential for your skin to breathe, keeping pores unclogged is key for healthy and radiant-looking skin. And startng the day with fresh clean skin is the way for easy and smooth make up application. Having a cleanser which cleans is important, yet you need one which isnt too strong that it remoces all oils i.e. the natural oils that keep your face hydrated, because then it could dry out your skin which in turn leads your face to produce even more oils. Did you know sometimes oily skin is caused by dryness? Now you do! ; )

I myself have combination skin, which sometimes can get rather oily on my T-zone especially after mid-day. Certain times when I use products that are too strong, I find my skin feeling tight after wash - that indicates that cleanser was drying for my sensitive skin. I would find myself waking up with more oils in the morning day after.

It took me a few years to realise my skin was sensitive cuz my skin tends to turn reddish quickly after being irritated; I was told later on by a few beauticians that my skin was probably the sensitive kind. Since then I have always kept "gentle" or "suitable for sensitive skin" labels as a priority when it comes to looking for beauty products.

natural organic beauty product for face sensitive skin type gentle gel

Recently Ive been introduced to this newly launched gentle cleanser by Winter Organics - their Chamomile Facial Cleanser. From the list above, you can see that ingredients used are naturally derived and au natural. My favourite ingredient would be Calendula since Ive been fairly familiar with it since recently I have been using Calendula baby care range for my 3-month old baby girl. Calendula is a plant extract which is beneficial for dry skin, scars, and wounds. It is gentle with moisturizing and healing properties. If you did read my previous blog post you would know I shared about using Calendula facial cream for my baby when she had tiny red bumps on her face (read here: http://vannytelly.blogspot.sg/2015/11/baby-preparation-hospital-packing-list.html), just a few applications and it all went away. Miracle or what? ; )

What I love about this product?

- The Orange Scent
When I first used the Chamomile Facial Cleanser, I thought to myself how much I loved the citrus-y smell. On the subsequent washes, there was a time I said in my mind "OMG I LOVE THE SCENT"... Hahaha..  Really love the smell, cannot explain. Try and tell me if you love it as much as I do. Its really refreshing and calming.

- Gentle on sensitive skin
Cleanser is pH5 formulated which is suitable for all skin types and even sensitive skin. It even speeds up acne healing time with anti-inflammatory properties. My skin felt fresh and definitely no tightness after washing, in fact my face felt soft and supple. I was told that the cleanser is so gentle, I could use on my baby as well. Hehe.

- Natural & Organic
Zero chemicals = healthy well being. In this day & time, many things we use and eat are polluted with chemicals - which may cause health hazards later in life. Body belongs to oneself, why not do your part to take care of your health in any possible way. In this aspect, it is as simple as that. ; )

- Cruelty Free
For an animal lover, this was definitely an eye-catcher and motivation to grab a tube or two. Products from Winter Organics is certified cruelty free and vegan under People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). You know it is when you see this cute bunny logo on the product.

diy tattoo choker with charm | How to keep teens alcohol and drug free this summer!

,

diy tattoo choker with charm

Summertime is here – and so is the season when many teens with time on their hands turn to experimenting with alcohol and drugs. Rather than throw up your hands and say there’s nothing you can do, take a minute to reflect on just how important and influential parents’ roles are to their children.
In fact, you can make a difference. It all starts with having proactive strategies in place to ensure your teens learn to live by the family’s rules and moral values, to appreciate that there are healthier ways to enjoy their summer months, and that responsibility is something that needs to be practiced.
What can you do? What are some of the most important areas to focus on? Here are some suggestions.
Be Involved
Instead of just going off to work and reminding teens to “be good” or “stick around the house” or warning them not to stay out too late, the best way to be in the know about what your children are doing is to be involved in their daily lives.
This doesn’t mean that you have to take time off from work to watch over them like a hawk, but it does mean that you engage in ongoing conversation about their likes, their friends, new activities and interests, what’s bothering them, any peer pressure, struggles with skills or learning ability, and what they want to get out of summer.
The more you interact with your teens, the more natural and comfortable this way of communicating will feel. The overarching impression is that you care about your kids and want to do all that you can to ensure that their teen years are filled with beneficial opportunities to learn and grow, and to build their core sense of values and increase personal responsibility.
Naturally, this will require more effort on your part than you may have thought, especially if you are only now beginning to realize that you can’t just leave kids to grow up on their own. In a vacuum, there are all sorts of dangers and risks for teens. Without firm and loving guidance and a moral compass, teens will likely find themselves on the wrong side of decision-making at a critical time.
While this may be easy to recommend, how do you implement a strategy to be involved in your teens’ lives? You could try the following:
  • Ask about their plans for the summer.
  • Discuss as a family things to do together on the weekend or make plans for a family summer vacation.
  • Learn the names and background of all your teen’s friends.
  • Communicate with the parents of your teen’s friends and make sure they know your wishes about not allowing alcohol and drug use.
  • Set clear rules, including rules about alcohol and drug use. Enforce the rules you set.
  • Know where your children are, what they are doing, whom they are with, and whom they are friends with.
  • Research activities together that your teen can participate in – hopefully, pertaining to his or her interests, but also encouraging them to discover new ones.
  • Have family meals together – no eating on the run or skipping meals. Use this time to discuss what everyone did today and what plans are for tomorrow and later on in the week.
  • Keep a family calendar with important dates and activities clearly listed.
  • Check in during the day with your teen using social media, instant message, texting or a quick phone call. Maybe use this time to let your teen know you’ve found out some information regarding an upcoming trip or event, or saw a great outfit or a guitar on sale or something else that will spark your teen’s interest and excitement.
  • Make time for one-on-one talks with your teen about anything that seems to be bothering him or her – or gently try to determine what may be wrong, if you notice a difference in attitude, dress, manner of speech, appearance or disappearance of certain friends, and so on.
  • Create a pledge between yourself and your children that promises they will not drink alcoholand use drugs.
Be a Good Role Model
It goes without saying – but it needs to be repeated – that parents should show teens good behaviorby their own actions. This means that parents have to know that their teenage son and daughter will be watching how they behave when others are around at a party where alcohol is served, at a restaurant when the parents order wine or cocktails and then get in the car and drive, even casual comments made about alcohol or drug use shown in movies and on television.
If you don’t want your teens to believe you have a laissez-faire attitude about drinking and drug use, you need to demonstrate that you have the good sense not to drink to excess, to drink and then drive, to drink regularly, to pop pills for every little reason, to combine pills and alcohol, to relax and unwind with a joint, a beer and a pill of some sort.
Beyond not drinking and using drugs – unless the medication is prescribed for you by a doctor and taken only by you for the purposes prescribed – you also need to convey that drinking and drug use does not solve problems. Instead, it creates and exacerbates problems.
Does this mean a radical change in your lifestyle? Maybe, but wouldn’t that be for the better? If you are a concerned parent, paying attention to rampant drug and alcohol use in society and knowing that teens are naturally curious and want to experiment, maybe this is a small price to pay to ensure that your children have an opportunity to grow up safe, secure and able to make sound decisions.
The old way of thinking was that parents could help ensure their teens learned about responsible drinking by making sure the teens drank at home under parental supervision. Today, however, research has shown that this is a false and dangerous strategy. It only shows teens that drinking and drug use is permissible, not that it is dangerous.
Keep in mind that teens do not have a fully developed brain until they are in their 20s. Their ability to make sound decisions isn’t where it needs to be yet and they can and do engage in crazy and destructive behavior when under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Just because they may be drinking in front of you at home doesn’t make this pattern of behavior any safer or better for them.
If you have any doubt about the validity of the recommendation to not allow teens to drink at home, remember any adult or caregiver in your own life that you saw engage in inappropriate behavior while drinking or using drugs. Maybe it was an uncle that consistently got sloshed and stumbled out the door to drive, often winding up in fender-benders, getting arrested for DUI or got involved in fights, trouble with the law, missed work and so on. Maybe it was a parent or older brother that you saw drive while drunk or high. How much did this behavior influence your own beliefs about alcohol and drugs?
You are the most important influence on your growing teens. Consistent study findings have shown that teens consider their parents to be highly or somewhat influential in their lives. In other words, they do tend to listen to what parents tell them. The more often family rules and values are reiterated and adhered to, the more of an influence they tend to have on teens.
Being a positive role model to teens means that parents:
  • Stay away from alcohol in high-risk situations. For example, do not drive a vehicle after drinking.
  • Get help if you believe you (the parent) have an alcohol-related problem.
  • Do not give alcohol or drugs to your children. Convey in a clear and concise manner that alcohol and drugs in your home are off limits to them and their friends at all times.
Be Aware of Risk Factors
Being a responsible and loving parent also means that you take the time to familiarize yourself with risk factors that may propel your teen toward alcohol and drug use, including:
  • Any significant social transition, such as moving from middle school to high school and getting a driver’s license
  • Any family history of alcoholism or drug use
  • Depression and other serious emotional problems
  • A history of social and emotional difficulties
  • Any contact with peers involved in troubling or suspicious activities
According to the latest Monitoring the Future Study from the University of Michigan, underage drinking continues to be a pervasive problem among American youth. The study of 10th and 12thgraders found that:
  • Nearly half (44 percent) of teens have consumed alcohol within the last year, while more than one in four teens (26 percent) reports having been drunk in the last year.
  • More than a quarter (26 percent) of teens said they had consumed alcohol within the last month, while more than one in seven (15 percent) reported being drunk in the last 30 days.
  • One in seven teens (14 percent) said they have had five or more drinks (binge drinking) in a row within the last 14 days.
  • More than three-quarters of 10th graders (78 percent) say it is fairly or very easy to get alcohol if they want some and more than half of 8th graders report the same.
Work With Schools and the Community
Consistency of the message that alcohol and drugs are off-limits needs to be communicated. To ensure this happens, parents should work with their children’s schools, with other members in the community and the local government. Here are the goals, as recommended by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in What You Can Do to Prevent Your Child from Drinking Alcohol:
  • Schools and the community support as well as reward young people’s decision not to drink [and use drugs].
  • Schools and the community identify and intervene early with children involved in underage drinking [and drug use].
  • Make sure that rules about underage drinking [and drug use] are in place at home, in school, and in your community.
  • Ensure that agreements of acceptable behavior are established, well-known, and consistently applied.
  • No alcohol [or drugs] permitted at parties and social events at home or elsewhere where children are present.
Be Consistent and Loving, but Firm
Bottom line: it just isn’t possible for parents to be with their teens 24/7 to protect them from harm. But parents can and should do the best they can to prepare their teens to be able to handle pressure and temptations to use alcohol and drugs. It is a big part of parental responsibility. In fact, parents have the best chance of helping shape their teens’ attitudes and beliefs about alcohol and drugs by virtue of their own behavior.
Above all, be loving parents. Keep the lines of communication open and honest. You and your children are in this together. You also want the best for their future. Give them the solid foundation they need to grow up with self-confidence, to be able to face life’s challenges and stresses and opportunities – without turning to alcohol and drugs.
Keep conversations going from their early childhood through adolescence and the teen years.  Be consistent, stay on message, be loving, but firm, and always be there for your children.
It’s the best thing parents can do to keep teens away from alcohol and drugs – this summer and anytime of the year.
