The White Lie

Well we have seen a series of very interesting events unfold over the last week both Nationally and locally in Chicago. It would seem that the truth always comes out at some time. Lying is not the way to do things through life. Since I am not an overly religious person, but this line from the Bible sets the tone, "and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.",, John 8:32. 

So when a National News Anchor Brian Williams is removed from his anchor position for telling a

lie about how events actually occurred, and he calls it "mis-remembering". Itultimately brings into question the very integrity of his reporting. He violated his trust with the public, by failing to be a "mirror of the world" as a journalist.  

Now yesterday NBC announced that they have suspended Brian Williams without pay for questions regarding his truthfulness in the incident in Iraq, as well as other incidents in New Orleans and elsewhere.  There will certainly be more information that will come out about this 

Then we turn to the revelations that surfaced yesterday that an investigation was unfolding about Jackie Robinson West Baseball team and where they get their players from. Today the National Little League Baseball has stripped the U.S. championship from the Chicago-based Jackie Robinson West team and has suspended the coach for violating a rule prohibiting the use of players who live outside the geographic area that the team represents. The Little League awarded the 2014 National title to the Las Vegas baseball team that lost to JRW.  

Ultimately the kids lose out, because adults behaved poorly. The kids were not party to the decisions adults make, to expand the league boundaries, to cross over or encroach upon other leagues boundaries to create a super team, which ultimately took them to the National Championship. The kids did what any kid would want to do, play, win and succeed at a sport they love. 

But what do these two incidents have incommon with each other, it goes to integrity and truthfulness. It comes down to just a few words. Those words are a "lie" and "cheat".  A lie is a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood, something intended or serving to convey a false impression; an inaccurate or false statement; a falsehood.  When Brian Williams made that decision to tell a story over a twelve years period, he made a conscious decision to embellish his actual involvement in Iraq stating his helicopter was hit by an RPG, when in fact he was never on the actual helicopter that had experienced that scary event.  

In fact the actual event according to Military personnel was brought to light after "The admission came after crew members on the 159th Aviation Regiment’s Chinook that was hit by two rockets and small arms fire told Stars and Stripes that the NBC anchor was nowhere near that aircraft or two other Chinooks flying in the formation that took fire. Williams arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter after the other three had made an emergency landing, the crew members said." according to Stars and Stripes online.  Brian Williams made a conscious decision to tell a lie back then, and continued to perpetrate that lie across the twelve years, including a blog post and then on National News when he took the Army Sergeant to the basketball game. Let me reiterate he made a conscious decision. 

Brian Williams made comments that he was scared, in a news story to Stars and Stripes Magazine as he tried to backpedal his story. Williams said, he was "scared", it was his first "combat experience", and the "Fog of War" , "It was my first engagement of the war and remember I was scared...and it all became a fog of getting down on the ground, what do we do now,...I did what a civilian, an untrained civilian, would do in that instance and it was being scared...All we knew is we had been fired upon," the journalist said.

So why do people "lie" or "embellish"? People have embellished over history that history tells who we were, but myths tell who we are. Hence, anyone pretending to be objective has to intellectually fight his own natural instincts to keep from putting a spin on whatever hes commenting on. Its just a law of human nature: where you sit is where you stand. 

In addition, in the workplace people lie because of competition and how it is such a "cut-throat and a desire to get ahead of the others, often induces people to lie." says Buzzfeed. Especially up and coming reporters, who are trying to make a name for themselves in an extremely competitive work environment. 

Whatever the reason that Mr. Williams continued his lie over a decade is only known to him, but perhaps it is simply that telling the same story over a decade, he started to actually believe the lie and enjoyed the attention that it brought to him. Or there may be a another reason. To admit the lie, jeopardizes the very career that the lie, and perhaps other lies is founded upon. We shall never know, except, the only one that does know trulyis Mr. Williams himself. 

Cheating

Now we turn to Jackie Robinson West and why the adults make a decision to put into place actions that might jeopardize the integrity of their league. The National Baseball Little League has rules put in place to identify boundaries for leagues, as well as how leagues are to expand upon boundaries. We learned yesterday that JRW didnt follow those rules, either subconsciously or intentionally rules were either ignored or circumvented. 

Cheating is the getting of reward for ability by dishonest means or finding an easy way out of an unpleasant situation according to Wikipedia. But regardless, however you want to call it, cheating, bypassing or circumventing the rules an action, by the JRW league was put in play which resulted in players who were not in the league to play on ta super team. 

The culture of winning, and all the material benefits that come with it, encourages top athletes to bend the rules, look for ways to take advantage of situations, and achieve success and recognition any way they can.

When looking at youth sports, one has to look a the motivations of the coaching staff.. One has to ask the question, "What is the Purpose of Youth Sports"  Is it to prepare players to go to the next level in collegiate or professional sports? Then the coaching staff should be teaching them the very things they need to get to that next level.  Or is it the coaches job to teach character and values, to prepare youths for life both during and after sports.  

Certainly the behavior on the field and actions by the coaches on the field showed that they were teaching character and core values. There were numerous anecdotal incidents which exemplified this very such thing. In one incident a JRW player was over-zealously celebrating as he ran by the the Las Vegas bench.  The JRW coach made the his player go over to the Las Vegas bench and apologize. That is class, sportsmanship and character. How does that match up against the decision to circumvent rules, to enhance the teams abilities and players? 

How far is a coach, parent or the league willing to go to devalue the success of a team by cutting corners to win? Gamesmanship occurs when the coaches take their eyes off of learning and executing the fundamental sports skills in exchange for the win. Ultimately the team exchanges short-term success for long-term development. 

What we have learned from both of the incidents detailed the ends only justify the means if you dont get caught. Certainly the Wall Street bankers, energy and communication companies who have caused financial meltdowns, didnt think they were going to get caught, they sacrificed long-term development for short-term success. Either way it is looked at their sacrifice to win at all costs, the goal to look better in they eyes of another, the vanity has damaged, impeded or hurt others. . 

In sports, the goal is to win. Plain and simple. Let’s be honest, it is about whether you win or lose, not just how you play the game.  But there is a line that many parents and coaches cross when it comes to winning. And that line is the difference between winning and winning at all costs.

Amy Rees Anderson, a reporter at Forbes Magazine, says that "Success will come and go, but integrity is forever."  It means doing the right thing at all times and in all circumstances, regardless if someone is watching or not.

When we leave this world the only thing we can take with us is our integrity and respect. If we sacrifice honor, integrity and respect for winning at all costs, or lying, we give up the only thing which defines us and those who can remember us for.

The chances of Hepatitis C has jumped thrice in the four Appalachian states in the instance of hepatitis C. This came up in the study conducted by the US Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention.

The CDC scanned the time zone between 2006 and 2012 and hepatitis C infections were on the rise in rural areas of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. admissions for the treatment of opioid dependency jumped from 21.1 percent in the said states. In fact going with the facts and figures, close to 44.8% of the 1,377 fresh instances were reported in the age group below 30. This led to confirmed reports that the incidence was highest in the 30 age group which sees the maximum incidence of hepatitis C.

The main reasons for this were substance use treatment that the natives of these places were subject to. The increase in heroin use in these states matched the national census that talked of first-time heroin use from 90,000 people in 2006 to close to 156,000 in 2012. The latest figures supporting the claims of the study was reported.

The rate of HIV or infection among the young target group who inject drugs in Central Apalachia is quite low as compared to the figures in the four states.  Hepatitis C is the most common infection that is blood-borne and affects close to 3 million people.

The report was published in the May 8 edition of the morbidity and mortality weekly report.

No one expected gangs to find their way to Pill Hill.

That was one thing that attracted Bernice Mack to the neighborhood more than 40 years ago. More than the quiet streets, though, it was thecharming red brick trilevel on South Chappel Avenue that grabbed her attention.

Mack fell in love with the four-bedroom house with a chain-link fence and a rose garden in the front yard the

first time she saw it in fall 1970. Here, the registered nurse and her husband, a suburban bus driver, could live among like-minded people, building a prosperous legacy for their budding family that they would pass on through generations.

Their South Side neighborhood was named for the many doctors and pharmacists who once lived there. When whites moved out in the late 1960s, well-to-do African-Americans — entertainers, morticians, lawyers — bought their sprawling Prairie-style homes atop the Stony Island Ridge.

The nurses, police officers and teachers who moved into the bungalows at the bottom of the hill were not as affluent, but an address in Pill Hill firmly established them in Chicagos black middle class. The bottom of the hill was a step up for Mack and her husband, Gordon Dennis, who had previously rented an apartment a few

miles north in Chatham.

"I didnt know the history of Pill Hill at that time," said Mack, 67. "I just liked the way the neighborhood looked."

After she and her husband separated, Mack raised her three children there without worries. Pill Hill was shielded from gangs by an imaginary barrier, built on class and wealth, that relegated violence to impoverished neighborhoods.

But over time, the gangs showed less and less respect for geography. With every generation, families in Pill Hill became more vulnerable.

By the time Macks daughter, Angela Hongo, 44, an office manager at a Chicago publishing company, bought the beige brick Georgian next door in 1999, gangs had slid in from the outskirts. And by the time Hongos children, Jarius and Jordonea, entered grade school, gangs had claimed the corner outside their classrooms.

By the time they reached high school, Jarius had fallen into their grips and Jordonea was on the fringes.
The story of teenagers being lured into gangs is a familiar one in Chicago. But not in a neighborhood like this, not in a family like this. Once gangs broke through, even a tenacious grandmother and a committed mother

couldnt keep the seductive forces at bay.

Not even the police can explain what happened.

"You normally relate gang issues and gang fighting to war-torn neighborhoods, but thats not the case. The homes are well-kept, the lawns are manicured and when you go there, you feel like youre in a suburban community," said Cmdr. Scott Ruiz, of the Police Departments South Chicago District. "The violence is puzzling when you come into a neighborhood like this."

Mack, who said she is one of only three of the early black settlers still living on the block, believes she knows exactly what happened. Two decades ago, when young men started hanging out late at night at a basketball court across the street from her house, the neighbors got together and forced the city to tear up the cement and replace it with grass and flowers.

But Pill Hill is a different place now, with a new set of people living at the bottom of the hill.

"People know there is a gang problem in the neighborhood. We know what to do, but nobody is out there doing anything," said Mack, who organized the first block club in the 1980s. "We used to be able to leave our doors open. ...We all have alarm systems now, and Im not accustomed to that."

What is more disturbing, Mack said, is that her own teenage grandson — whose generation was supposed to reap the benefits of her pioneering move to Pill Hill — has contributed to the neighborhoods problems.
Angela Hongo was late getting to the Cook County Juvenile Detention Center on Nov. 13. This time she didnt feel like rushing, so she slowly made her way through the security checkpoint and down the long, dreary corridor to Courtroom No. 4.

She had been in this place many times in the past two years — sitting on a wooden bench outside Circuit Judge Andrew Bermans courtroom, waiting for Jarius name to be called. But this time was different. She was more nervous, even fearful, about what could happen at the hearing.

With Jarius just five months from his 18th birthday, his time as a juvenile offender was winding down. And Berman, who had given him chance after chance, was growing tired of seeing the teenager with a boyish face and a quiet demeanor standing before him in handcuffs.

This time, Berman would have to decide whether to send Jarius away to the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice, where hard-core young prisoners are held. After this, any new offense would land him in the adult correctional system — Cook County Jail.

Schools were barely off to their start this fall when 24 gang members were arrested in various locations around Fauquier County. These gang members were arrested on numerous charges, including the sale of narcotics, violent crimes, racketeering and perhaps most important of all – human trafficking.

Fauquier County, in Virginia, is perhaps best known for its rolling hills, agriculture, beautiful rural countryside and its proximity to both Washington DC and the Blue Ridge Mountains. But on this occasion it was the center of an operation that took down a number of traffickers making profit through exploiting the lives of other human beings.

Fauquier County doesn’t seem like a typical location for human trafficking. You can’t find a central red light district, observe prostitutes walking the streets or hear stories of children working endlessly in factories or on farms. Yet, despite being the eighth most affluent county in the United States, Fauquier County is not immune to one of the fastest growing crime activities in the world.

Human trafficking is the illegal and forceful detention of a human being for work and profit by another human being. Human trafficking is modern-day slavery, and it is happening right here in our own backyards.

An estimated 14,500 to 50,000 people are trafficked into the United States each year, while the number of convictions during Fiscal Year 2012 totaled 138. According to the 2013 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report,

“DOJ convicted a total of 138 traffickers in cases involving forced labor, sex trafficking of adults, and sex trafficking of children, compared to 151 such convictions obtained in 2011. Of these, 105 were predominantly sex trafficking and 33 were predominantly labor trafficking, although some cases involved both.”

Simply put, the number of prosecutions are not happening in proportion to the number of persons being trafficked into the United States.

The statistics can be overwhelming, especially when put into context with the estimated 27 million slaves that are exploited across the globe.

But there are organizations across Virginia who are stepping up to eradicate injustice and work on behalf of people whose lives have been taken by the hands of an oppressor. On a national level there are an incredible number of information resources, tips on prevention and ways to act presented on the Department of State’s Office to Monitor & Combat Trafficking in Persons website.

Across the state of Virginia, specifically, there are a number of organizations that act as both hubs for resources and centers of action to combat trafficking.

In October, the Northern Virginia Human Trafficking Task Force was given a $1 million dollar grant to create a special task force dedicated to investigating human trafficking and related crimes. Collaborating with the Fairfax County Police Department, Polaris Project and United States Attorney’s Office, FBI, Homeland Security, the Virginia Attorney General’s Office and local law enforcement agencies, this new task force is attempting to address the growing problem of human trafficking, especially related to organized crime groups like gangs.

In the state capital of Richmond, the Richmond Justice Initiative (RJI), is a faith-based non-profit led by Sara Pomeroy who inspires others to act like modern-day abolitionists by mobilizing communities in Virginia to become educated, to learn how to advocate for the oppressed and to take action on behalf of those being exploited by traffickers. RJI has developed initiatives in other cities around the state and has helped pass significant legislation in the state of Virginia.

The Virginia Beach Justice Initiative (VBJI), is an offspring of RJI and works towards ending human trafficking in the Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads area of Virginia. VBJI has as its mission:

“…to bring an end to the issue of sex trafficking by empowering the residents of Virginia Beach and surrounding cities through education and awareness, advocacy and prevention campaigns.”

RJI and VBJI are especially inspired by the work of the International Justice Mission (IJM), a human rights agency that brings rescue to victims of sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression, and works for sustainable and developmental change in nations across the world. IJM has garnered notable grants from Google, Inc. and The Gates Foundation in recent years as they have worked toward systemic change with native communities to ensure public justice systems that protect the poor.

Human trafficking is a significant problem and no one needs to go to the red-light district in some far away city to see injustice first-hand. The exploitation for profit of one human being by another human being is happening right here in our own backyards and neighborhoods. But as the problem has grown, organizations and communities committed to ending modern-day slavery have mirrored that growth, and together with these institutions – institutions like NVHTTF, RJI, VBJI, and IJM, they are signposts of hope across the state of Virginia and around the world for victims human trafficking today.

ST. GEORGE — A counselor at a LaVerkin facility for troubled youth was sentenced to 120 days in jail Tuesday for showing personal videos of sexual behavior to boys being housed at the institution.

Donald M. Brown Jr., 48, pleaded guilty in August to five felony counts of offering harmful material to a minor as part of an agreement that dismissed five other charges, but acknowledged in the 5th District Court

hearing that he had written a letter to the court in which he claimed the charges were racially motivated.

“I was a little frustrated because some of (the accusations are) true and some of it is not,” Brown, an African-American, told Judge Eric Ludlow. “The statement I wrote I did out of frustration. I apologize and I’d just like to move on.”

Brown said he discussed the videos with the youth, contradicting an investigator’s statement that Brown admitted the youths had seen pornography on his phone “several times, but every time was an accident” and that “a LOT of accidents” took place.

Deputy County Attorney Zachary Weiland expressed concern that Brown was not taking responsibility for his actions, and Ludlow added that he was troubled by Brown’s statements.

“I don’t think you’ve come clean, quite frankly,” the judge said.

Under questioning about whether Brown was disputing his guilty pleas, and after further discussion with defense attorney Ryan Stout, Brown added, “I admit to it and I apologize.”

Brown could have faced up to five years in prison for each charge, but pre-sentencing investigators recommended the 120-day sentence based in part on Brown’s lack of prior criminal history and compliance with court instructions.

“He … grew up on the rough side of Chicago,” Stout said, asking Ludlow to keep Brown out of jail so he could keep his job. “He’s a man that’s proud of his lack of criminal history. He’s got a lot of friends walking around with convictions. … Mr. Brown’s done a fantastic job of staying out of trouble.”

Stout said Brown has found a job since being fired from the Youth Foundation Success Academy, a youth facility that is an outgrowth of the Cross Creek Programs and Horizon Academy.

Stout asked that any sentence allow him to continue working at his new job

Brown’s wife, who acknowledged being part of the threesome shown in the videos, was also employed at the youth facility, but Stout said Brown is now the family’s sole provider.Ludlow agreed with the recommended four-month jail sentence, however, granting Brown credit for 17 days served. Ludlow also denied Stout’s request for Brown to turn himself in by the weekend and instead ordered Brown taken into custody immediately.

Ludlow said he was not inclined to be lenient because multiple victims were involved and the victims were “particularly vulnerable,” noting Brown’s position of authority over them.

Behavior like this should not be tolerated.

The recent events in Washington D.C. have now raised the question did Aaron Alexis suffer from PTSD and did that drive him towards this shooting?

In May 6, 2004, in Seattle Alexis was arrested for shooting out the tires of another mans vehicle in what he later described as "an anger-fueled blackout," according to the Seattle Police Department. Alexis did not appear to suffer from the typical symptoms of PTSD.

So what did clues about Alexis are available:

• Alexis reportedly heard voices, indicating paranoia,
• Alexis suffered from sleep disorders (#)
• His father said he had anger management issues
• He had several run ins with law enforcement, two for discharging firearms.
• Alexis had a history of playing video games, actually missed work because of it.
• Investigators later spoke with Alexis father, who told police that his son had anger management problems associated with post-traumatic stress disorder, which he suffered after working "as an active participant in rescue attempts" during the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, the report said. Although there is no concrete record Alexis did anything like that at all.(1)
• Alexis converted to Buddhism
• According to a former roommate, Alexis was "frustrated with life." and he was having a hard time getting on his feet. 
• Alexis was also very frustrated with his current employer, the contracted company for the Navy Shipyard. A dispute over pay from being aboard on behalf of the company.
• Another roommate, stated that Alexis was fascinated by guns, "He was ... knowledgeable with military rifles and handguns. At least he led us to believe he was. But nobody ever had the idea that he would use them in a derogatory way," he said. (2)

A fellow colleague Andy OHara a retired California Highway Patrol Officer and founder of Badge of Life wrote an article titled "Does PTSD cause Violence?"  In this article they sum up the effects of PTSD and discuss the cause of PTSD and how it manifests itself among our U.S.

Military.  Here is an excerpt from that article....

But what about the actual PTSD symptoms? What are they, and do they typically include violent behaviors, like murder?

 

Simply put, PTSD is “fear” based, not “aggression” based. The DSM-IV-R (Diagnostic Statistical Manual, Revised) is clear. In brief, the primary features of the this illness are:

•  flashbacks
• withdrawal
• numbing
• hyperarousal
• and isolation.

Violence is not included. In fact, not one single research study exists linking violent behavior with the diagnosis of PTSD. While, anger and agitation are common symptoms of PTSD, these feelings tend to be turned inward, contributing to making it the terribly painful disorder it is. Combined with depression, it is not unusual for the sufferer to become suicidal. But a diagnosis of PTSD, in itself, does not make a person violent towards others. Again, the concern should be more that they will be a

danger to themselves, not others. There is a possibility, of course, that unintentional harm could come to others as the result of a suicide attempt, not only by gunshot, but though an intentional automobile accident, jumping from a building, or any other number of self-destructive acts. John Violanti, Ph.D., in his book, “Police Suicide: Epidemic in Blue,” points out the interesting phenomenon of “suicide by suspect,” in which an officer consciously or unconsciously wishes to die and willfully involves himself in situations of extreme danger or confrontation with a criminal, thereby increasing the risk of death. Even so, in these situations the danger to others is indirect and unintentional.

 

The unfortunate result of this misinformation is that more and more cases are erroneously using the defense that PTSD is to blame for murders by veterans when, in fact, there were other emotional disorders and problems involved, including prior anger issues, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and substance abuse, that were more likely responsible for the individual’s violent behavior. Youth consuming energy drinks were more likely to play video games for hours, drink sugar-sweetened beverages, and smoke, according to a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

Researchers for the study, published in the May/June issue of the academic journal, surveyed about 2,800 adolescents from grades 6 through 12 in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota region. The classroom survey

asked students about their sports drink and energy drink consumption, as well as other behaviors.

According to a LiveScience article, 38 percent of those surveyed said they consumed sports drinks at least once a week, while 15 percent said they consumed energy drinks at least once per week.

On average, teens who consumed sports drinks or energy drinks at least once per week played more hours of video games, drank more servings of sugar-sweetened beverages, and were more likely to have tried smoking, than those who consumed sports drinks or energy drinks less than once per week.

Boys who drank energy drinks at least once per week spent on average four more hours playing video games than boys who drank energy drinks less often. About 20 percent of boys and girls who consumed energy drinks frequently said they had smoked cigarettes, compared to eight percent of those who did not consume energy drinks as frequently.

Researchers write that the findings “are troubling because they may indicate a clustering of problem behaviors among some adolescents.”

But because the study was conducted all at once, there is no way to prove that consuming sports drinks and energy drinks caused these behaviors. Researchers cannot say which came first—the sports and energy drink consumption or the unhealthy behaviors.

“Based on this study, we can’t blame the sports and energy drinks at all,” Dr. Jason Block, an assistant professor of population medicine at Harvard Medical School who was not involved in the study, told LiveScience. “It’s just that adolescents who aren’t focused on healthy behaviors are more likely to consume these beverages.”

Researchers said that future studies that follow teens over time are needed to determine the reason for the link.

He told her she was beautiful and had a future as a model. He said that at just 17, she was already his "top-notch bitch."

In a federal courtroom Tuesday, the former prostitute, now 21, barely glanced at the pimp she knew as Casino, describing for jurors how he kept her in line by preaching loyalty, coaxing her ego and preying on her vulnerabilities.

"He made me feel good," the woman, whose first name is Kaitlin, testified in a soft but confident voice. "It made me feel like I was important. That somebody needed me."

Sitting a few feet away in a gray sweater and black eyeglasses, McKenzie "Casino" Carson frowned as he scribbled notes on a yellow legal pad.

Kaitlin, whom the Tribune is not identifying because she was underage at the time, was the first of Carsons four alleged victims who will testify at his trial on four counts of sex trafficking. Prosecutors painted Carson as a "master manipulator" who used everything from sweet talk to threats and beatings to coerce runaways and drug addicts into lives of prostitution.

Once he had the women under his thumb, Carson essentially ran their lives, posting sex ads on the Internet and keeping them in dingy suburban motels, prosecutors said. Carson then kept all or a portion of the proceeds for himself.

When the women got out of line, Carson would whip them with a belt and rape them while the others were forced to watch, prosecutors said. Jurors are expected to view explicit photos of the abuse seized from Carsons phone and computer as well as detailed diary entries the victims were forced to make listing the men they had sex with and how much they were paid.

In her opening statement Monday, Carsons attorney, Ellen Domph, urged jurors to put aside any disgust they might feel over the graphic evidence and focus on whether the prosecution proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. She said the alleged victims — most of whom are drug addicts with criminal records of their own — were "smart and wily and know how to get what they want."

"They lie about everything," Domph said. "The evidence will show some of them made their living by lying."

In her testimony, Kaitlin said she was introduced to Carson in a Joliet motel in late 2009 by a mutual friend who said Carson was looking for women who wanted to make some extra money modeling. Twisting in the witness chair with bright pink hair, Kaitlin broke down as she testified how Carson brought her into a bathroom and told her she had to show him what she could do, then forced her to engage in sex.

Over the next several months, Kaitlin worked under the name "Amber" on and off for Carson, who moved operations from motel to motel to keep a step ahead of police.

Kaitlin said Carson knew she was underage, even asking her to produce her ID to prove it.

"He said it was all right, wed just have to keep it under the radar until I turned 18," she said.

Carson is the latest in a string of alleged street pimps to be charged in federal court. Several have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

Here in supermax, some of the guards are decent people. They walk around with face shields because there are guys who throw human waste on them and each other, and some guys spit on them. This place is full of cell warriors, guys who talk and scream and yell at each other from their cells, which we are never allowed out of except to take showers.

There are times when the smells are nothing but human excrement from the open waste pond. It lasts for hours. The opposite of that stink is the smell of the officers food nuked in the microwave. Compared to the food they feed us, the smell of real food makes my mouth water and guys start asking the guards for some of whatever smells so good.

Cockroaches are everywhere. They come out night and day. They get into all of our stuff everything.

Supermax is tough, but Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s jail is a much bleaker place. I thought things would be smoother after the jail, but I ended up at Alhambra Unit – where Arizona Department of Corrections determine your custody level – in a cell with a crazy guy. He wouldn’t sit still or leave the guards alone, making comments about female officers. He was always yelling at people outside the cell, trying to make himself out to be tough, but it was all an act.

Some guys at Alhambra Unit were so scared senseless of prison and wanted to be protected that they said they were gay or started acting gay, so they wouldn’t go to the general population. There was so much fear and hate. People were lost in a sea of discouragement. There was nothing but sitting and waiting as we were being tested and watched.

As the HIV outbreak continues in southeastern Indiana, a number of state officials have stepped up and implemented policies to combat the growing number of infections.

The most recent number of infected individuals, released by the Indiana State Department of Health on Tuesday, has reached 143, with 138 confirmed cases and five preliminary positive cases of HIV.

The outbreak is reportedly caused by needle sharing among intravenous drug users who are injecting the prescription painkiller Opana.

On March 26, Gov. Mike Pence signed an executive order allowing health officials in Scott County to open a needle exchange program. Participants in the program are provided with support for substance abuse, mental health and other health-related resources upon each visit in addition to access to clean syringes and a place to deposit used needles. The program collects basic demographic information but does not require individuals to give names.

Pence’s executive order was initially a temporary measure, intended to last for only 30 days but was extended for an additional 30 days on April 20 and will last until May 24.

As of Tuesday, there have already been 166 visitors to the needle exchange center who brought in 6,494 needles to be safely disposed of and were given 7,146 needles, according to the ISDH.

In December, prior to the start of the outbreak, there was only one needle exchange program in the state, and it required drug users to give personal information before receiving clean syringes.

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention visited Indianapolis on Monday and together with Pence traveled to Scott County to further asses the state of the outbreak.

While the temporary needle exchange program was being administered, Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller urged state lawmakers to reach a deal that would establish a more comprehensive exchange program throughout the state.

“As the HIV outbreak continues to grow in Scott County, it has become abundantly clear that the Austin community — and other locations that may be at risk — need a serious, immediate solution to curb rampant needle sharing among abusers,” Zoeller said last week in a press release. “Providing clean syringes is the fastest way to halt further spread of the virus from infected individuals to non-infected ones.”

Zoeller is the co-chair of the Indiana Prescription Drug Abuse Task Force, a group of 120 doctors, pharmacists, health officials, treatment providers and law enforcement. The task force has been meeting with health officials in Scott County to discuss the response efforts of the state.

Because this legislative session ends this week, the urgency to pass a measure establishing a needle exchange program was heightened. Lawmakers officially passed a measure Tuesday that would enable the implementation of a needle exchange program in counties that are struggling with hepatitis C or HIV outbreaks.

County officials would be able to have public meetings to decide whether or not to request permission from the state to create a needle exchange program. Following an official request, the state health commissioner would have 10 days to respond.

This measure also takes $500,000 from the state budget to fund additional law enforcement in areas where drug use and abuse is a significant problem.

Beth Meyerson, an assistant professor at the School of Public Health and the co-director for the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention, has vocalized the need for needle exchange programs in Indiana and concerns that need to be addressed about outbreaks such as this.

“We think about the access to needles, that’s one thing, and certainly understanding the use,” Meyerson said. “One of the questions we would ask is why are they using Opana? Were they shooting up before? Were they shooting up a cheaper substance? Understanding that sub-population and understanding what’s going on there is very, very important so that we can provide ?treatment.”

She added that she doesn’t think Indiana does a good job in providing funding to drug abuse treatment.

Experians ProtectMyID® exposes a disconnect between what people know about identity theft risks and what they actually are doing to protect themselves

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A new online survey by Harris Interactive, conducted for Experians ProtectMyID®, reveals consumers are still at high risk for identity theft, failing to practice even simple safeguards. The survey, fielded to coincide with National Protect Your Identity Week, shows the vast majority of U.S. adults (93 percent) recognize identity theft is a growing problem. Yet, 61 percent feel it would not be very difficult for a person to steal their identity and 67 percent are concerned that identity theft will affect them in the future.

The national study surveyed more than 2,000 consumers on their perceptions and activities related to identity theft. While 89 percent of online U.S. adults say they take steps to secure their digital information, more than half (55 percent) dont always check to see if a Website is secure before shopping online, and more than three out of five adults who have online accounts (63 percent) dont use a unique password for each of their online accounts.

"This survey clearly shows that, while people are more aware and concerned about identity theft, they are not doing what they should to stay protected, especially when it comes to online activities," said Ken Chaplin, senior vice president of marketing for Experians ProtectMyID. "Consumers clearly dont want to become victims, yet they continue to put themselves in danger."

The results also reveal that 92 percent of U.S. adults believe people should be more concerned about identity theft. In addition, 33 percent dont feel confident they are doing enough to protect their identities.

Additional key findings from the survey

Digital devices under-protected - U.S. adults own and use a variety of devices, but more than two in five of those who own a smartphone (43 percent) report they rarely or never use a password to unlock their smartphone. Additionally, 47 percent of adults who own a tablet indicate they rarely or never use a password to unlock their tablets.

Risky shopping - Ninety-one percent of U.S. adults shop online; however, many dont safeguard their credit card information. The survey shows that 57 percent of online shoppers dont always go to sites directly (by typing the name in their web browser), but instead click on links. This action increases the risk of going to a fraudulent site designed to capture the visitors personal information.

Social networking is too social - Among U.S. adults who have a social network profile such as Facebook and Twitter, slightly more than one in three (36 percent) manage their privacy settings on an ongoing basis. Many may be exposing themselves to fraud by allowing certain information to be public, such as educational background (60 percent), date of birth (44 percent), and email address (36 percent).

Real-world scenarios create simple dangers - Twenty-three percent of adults admit they set their purses, bags or jackets containing wallets under the table or behind them on a chair at a restaurant.

Social Security cards can put sensitive information into the wrong hands - Forty-six percent of adults write their Social Security number on job applications, medical forms, etc., and 29 percent say they carry their Social Security card (or a copy of it) in their wallet or purse.

If you Googled for themed cafes in Taipei, you would find a list and one of them would be the Modern Toilet Cafe. Wanting to pass some time during my recent solo trip to Taipei, I arranged for lunch with my Mom at the Modern Toilet Cafe. Come lets take a look at what the cafe had in store for us. ; )

On the ground floor youd find a staircase leading to the dining area on the second floor.

At the entrance, you already could see decors of toilet bowls & poop. Lol.

Arriving on the second floor was a crowd of customers dining on toilet bowls.
Looks pretty funny huh.

And this... Was my toilet bowl for that afternoon. Haha.

Seated down, we were greeted with a basin of poop - the decor under the dining table.
Fancy the view during mealtime?

Flipping through the menu, I found the prices rather reasonable. Main courses ranged from NT$200-$400, and each main course came with tea and an ice-cream. The variety was fairly wide too.

Payment was made at the cashier during order. Souvenirs can be purchased while waiting. 

Theres a corner with more novelty items for sale.

Gift items were funny-looking & affordable too.

I ordered a Classic Toilet Meal - Chicken Curry with rice. I ordered this thinking it was Japanese-style curry, ended up it tasted more like local Singapore curry. Curry gravy was thick and tasteful, and generous with the chicken chunks. Its not bad if you are a curry lover. The sides that came with the rice was a clear mushroom soup that tasted bland, and a small saucer of shell-like appetizer which I did not try cuz I wasnt supposed to take seafood. In the top right corner you see two glasses of beverages. The simple looking one was the complimentary red tea that came with the main course, and the blue urinal drink was Bubble Milk Tea which I topped up an additional NT$50 for. The Bubble Milk Tea was not fantastic, would rather buy from bubble tea stores else where. IMO the complimentary red tea actually tasted better than the Bubble Milk Tea. Topped up only for the novelty of the cup for photo-taking actually.

Picture looks good eh? Making myself feel hungry already. : P

Mom ordered a Seafood Pesto Cream Sauce Spaghetti. She said it tasted yummy though I personally felt nothing about it. Maybe it was because I tried this after taking a bite of my Curry Chicken and made this taste less. I must say it looked pretty decent though.

The complimentary Chocolate Ice Cream tasted a little like Milo Ice Cream.
Cute and quite tasty. Poop ice-cream anyone? : D

Total of approx. NT$750 was spent for 2 set meals, which was equivalent to SGD$33 - price was quite affordable I would say. Of course it was more expensive than local street foods, but for this price to dine for the experience while travelling, not that bad after all lah.
