Editors Note: Andrews Police Chief Joseph Cooper held a gang awareness seminar for residents earlier this week in his town.  Andrews is a small town in South Carolina with a population of 2,861 (2010 census) The town is approximately  2.2 square miles and sits between two counties.  

Drawing on his experience and expertise, Andrews Police chief Joseph Cooper held a discussion about gang awareness with town residents during a gathering he hosted on Nov. 2.

"Its not so much the number of people that attend," he said. "Its how many people that get the message that were going to bring."

Cooper said the meeting was pretty much a learning experience as a lot of people dont know about gangs in the state of South Carolina.

"The prevention act, which does not prevent anyone from joining a gang, is in place to enforce heavier penalties on those who are gang members," he said, adding its not against the law to be in a gang in South Carolina.

According to Cooper, a street gang or youth gang is referred to as a group who takes over territories in a particular city or neighborhood.

"A lot of people dont believe in small towns, like this, there are gangs," he said. "Im not saying there are gangs actually coming through this town, or an influx of gangs, but there are different types of gangs and we are going to discuss that."

Cooper pointed out the police definition of a gang and pretty much how it is used in court.

"Its five or more individuals. Two or three people hanging out together is not a gang. The law says you need five or more," he said. "They put that in place because everyone has friends but when you get five or more we look at the criminal aspect of it."

A gang may range from a loose group of individuals who may hang around together to commit a crime, or they have gang colors, gang hand signals, initiation rights.

They also have an area or region they frequent all the time. All this is considered gang activity in the eyes of the law, Cooper explained. Reds, orange, gray, white, golden black, black and blue are different gang sets.

He also discussed what gang members do.
"They intimidate, of course. They see confrontation with other rival gang members, that does happen," he said. "They commit crimes against persons and property, and assault."

He also said they do a lot of drug trafficking and, "Andrews is an area that drugs come in from Myrtle Beach, Georgetown and Horry County."

"They are coming into this area, whether it is Andrews town limits or Williamsburg County, or surrounding areas and they are loading and dropping off money for drugs and they are keeping it moving up and down the corridor between Horry County, Georgetown, Williamsburg and Berkeley counties," Cooper said.
"Anytime you have a town that sits in an area close to an off ramp or a major thoroughfare highway, you are going to have that problem thats going to come in."

SLED is investigating and keeping documentation, Cooper said, and Andrews is very low as far as crime rates and murders. "That can change tomorrow, that can change tonight," he said. "All we need is for three or four crimes to happen tonight or this weekend and we went to another level, especially if we dont solve them." The rivalry between Georgetown and Andrews goes further than sports, he said, theres gang rivalry between the two.

"Im telling you this because I can tell you its true because not only did I investigate this stuff prior to coming here, but because I am also a part of the FBI Task Force of Criminal Intelligence and we talk about this stuff," he said. "We have a collaboration of a bunch of law intelligence agencies with the FBI, municipalities and the federal government."

Cooper told those attending that, "We havent had any gang activity in this town since Ive been here (about four months). For the most part, this town is safe. But like I said things could change at midnight tonight, you never know."

Kids and Dogs Part of County’s Youth Education InitiativeBy Vy Townsend Malik

What does a compassionate, gentle, professional youth officer have in common with a slobbering, lumbering, disciplined bloodhound?

They bring J.K. H.O.P.E. – Just Kids Hands On Pet Education – to the youth of Van Zandt County.  The unique intervention program provides those ages 6-18 an opportunity to share respect, responsibility and care for animals through hands-on experiences.

Primary Prevention and Supervision Officer Venetia Stanley works at the county’s Youth Multi Service Center, taking her 120-pound, red bloodhound Big Mac to youth in the Juvenile Probation Department, to school groups and to the Canton Animal Shelter where she helps young people develop skills using the natural relationships and unique bonds that develop when kids become responsible for caring for animals.

School Programs
The J.K. H.O.P.E. Program works daily in the Canton Animal Shelter and on special occasions for Citizens League for Animal Welfare (C.L.A.W.) and the Humane Society, in adoption clinics and in small groups at schools.  She and Big Mac are weekly visitors at Grand Saline schools, and in the fall she hopes they will become regulars with the fifth-graders of Fruitvale Elementary School.  Stanley hopes to work also in the Canton school.

Big Mac shows off his obedience training and special tricks to students in a small group setting, they get to pet him and learn not to be afraid.  They also learn the safe way to approach a dog and ask their owner if they can pet it.

Stanley says one of the purposes of the program is to address the truancy problem by giving students an opportunity to be responsible for an animal.  “They gain self-esteem and learn responsibility.  If they like themselves because they are helping someone and if they know someone believes in them, they are more likely to stay in school,” Stanley said.

Stanley’s overall goal for the program is to help youth to develop a sense of responsibility – to animals, to other people and to themselves in completing tasks.  Through this creative approach the goal is to allow youth the opportunity to experience success and become more socially adjusted and productive members of the community.

“I want them to learn social skills and to learn to do something really well.  I try to make a difference in their lives by teaching them the satisfaction and joy of working with animals.”

Canton Shelter
During the summer from 9:00 AM until noon, Monday through Friday, kids in the program get to spend quality time at the Canton shelter being with animals.  The program pays the shelter for the “use” of their dogs.

Although the shelter is a “kill shelter” Stanley has seen very few animals that had to be put down.  People seem to come every day to find a new pet for their home.  And, Stanley admits she does take lots of kittens home to be her “barn cats.” “I want to give them at least a chance at a good life,” she says.

Kennels, which are immaculate, need cleaning every day.  The participants feed the dogs first and then take a break so the dogs can eat in a calm environment.  It is rare that the shelter has a dog that cannot be trusted to interact with the program participants.

Then the kids go to work – moving dogs from kennels that need cleaning to those already clean.  They remove the leftover food, and someone takes on the task of washing all the food dishes.  Others remove the waste on the kennel floors, wet the floors with hoses and scrub with detergent and a long-handled brush.

After rinsing the floor with the hose, the next step is to squeegee the floor to get rid of most of the water, and then use towels to dry it more so a dog will not slip and fall.

Once those tasks are done, the kids get leashes and take the animals outside in the enclosed yard for running and playing on agility equipment, teaching them tricks and being together in a social situation.

The kids work on obedience training with their animals, and Stanley reminds them that success comes in baby steps, and giving the dogs a soft “cheerleading praise.” After the outside time, the kids bring the dogs back in, put them in their individual kennel and usually sit down to pet and talk to their charges.

Building trust is a two-way process that can happen in such situations. The students learn the importance of responsible pet ownership and can feel good about having a part in getting a dog ready to be adopted.

Food, clean environment, exercise, disciplines and love . . . that is probably a winning combination not just for dogs but for humans as well.

It is three hours of hard work, but the rewards are great when a kid and a dog get to snuggle up together.

Stanley’s Mission
Stanley grew up in Houston and has lived in Wood County for 30 years.  Her husband Kevin is a paramedic, and they have three daughters, two grandsons and one granddaughter – and lots of animals.

Though her education was in journalism at San Jacinto Junior College and the University of Houston, she said, “I have always been around kids, and I want to make a difference in their lives.
“My parents were always there for us, their kids.  Even if both parents have to work, they still have a responsibility to build a family and to be a parent.

“I believe that a tired kid is a good kid, so I keep them busy.  Kids cannot handle a continuous lack of supervision, so I concentrate on being present with them, staying positive.  I remind myself that baby steps of responsibility and care aren’t only for gaining the trust of dogs but that approach also works for gaining the trust of kids and teaching them to be responsible.”

So many good character traits that parents want for their children are experienced and learned in the J.K. H.O.P.E. program – patience, compassion, motivation, problem-solving, self-discipline, nurturing and healthy grieving.  And much of it comes from loving a dog and being loved in return.

Physical activity may be a robust antidote to ward off sadness and suicidal thoughts in bullied adolescents.

In a survey of more than 13,000 youth in the United States, teens who said they exercised 4 to 5 days a week had less sadness, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts than those who exercised 1 or fewer days a week.

This protective effect of physical exercise extended to teens who reported that they had been bullied as well, according to Vermont researchers.

The study was published online July 17 in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Mood Enhancing Effects

"It is well established that exercise and physical activity have robust antidepressive, anxiolytic, and mood-enhancing effects in both animal and human models, regardless of age, gender, and fitness," lead author Jeremy Sibold, EdD, told Medscape Medical News.

"Physical activity has been implicated as a salient preventative and treatment modality for a range of psychological issues that include, but are not limited to, depression, anxiety, substance abuse and addiction, and posttraumatic stress syndrome, in both healthy and clinical populations," Dr Sibold said.

"In fact, the efficacy of physical activity interventions has even approached, and surpassed, that of standard pharmacological and behavioral interventions in some trials," he said.

"It became increasingly clear to us that physical activity may represent a safe, cost-effective intervention for the negative psychosocial consequences of bully victimization in school-age children," Dr Sibold said. "Given the substantial current focus on antibullying campaigns, it seemed to us that safe, cheap, and efficacious options are sorely needed to mitigate this growing problem. If we can prevent even one child from depression or self harm, this is worth it, hands down."

In the current study, Dr Sibold and his group analyzed data on 13,583 high school students from the 2013 National Youth Risk Behavior Survey, a representative sample survey of public and private high school students in the United States.

Overall, 30.0% of students reported sadness for 2 or more weeks, 22.2% reported suicidal ideation, and 8.2% reported a suicide attempt in the previous 12 months.

After adjusting for age, sex, and race, bullied students were twice as likely to report feeling sad and three times as likely to report suicidal ideation or attempt as those who did not report having been bullied.

Physical exercise mediated these symptoms of depression.

Students who reported exercising 4 to 5 days per week had lower adjusted odds of sadness, suicidal ideation, or suicide attempts than students who exercised 0 to 1 days per week (P < .0001).

The good effects of physical exercise were somewhat attenuated in bullied students but were still apparent. Engaging in physical activity for 4 or more days per week was associated with an approximately 23% reduction in suicidal ideation and attempt in bullied students.

"While observational in nature, if this is true, and replicated in prospective, randomized trials moving forward, physical activity in the form of exercise may represent a highly efficacious intervention that is readily available and accessible in the school-age population," Dr Sibold said.

"I do feel that, given the overall safety of physical activity and exercise for a majority of the population, that the medical arena can and should continue to support and recommend increased physical activity levels for children and adolescents for both physical and psychosocial benefits.

"Phys ed [physical education] is being reduced in many schools, our kids are progressively less active across time, and yet we literally may have a modality ? exercise ? that simultaneously addresses both the physical and psychological sequelae of many of these lifestyle and environmental threats," he said.

Innovative Study

"Regular exercise is an important, economical, and natural way to maintain physical and mental well being and may be particularly useful for individuals under stress, such as those being bullied," said Arshya Vahabzadeh, MD, from the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, when asked by Medscape Medical News to comment on this study.

"This innovative study shows a correlation between higher amounts of physical activity and decreased levels of sadness and suicidality in both bullied and nonbullied adolescents. However, the study methodology doesnt allow for the demonstration of causation, whether physical activity resulted in these changes, or whether these symptoms led to less physical activity," Dr Vahabzadeh said.

"While exercise may be important for improving adolescent mental health, adolescents who are experiencing suicidal thoughts should not attempt to control symptoms with exercise alone but should seek urgent psychiatric assessment and treatment," he added.

Dr Sibold and Dr Vahabzadeh report no relevant financial relationships.

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A new online survey by Harris Interactive, conducted for Experians ProtectMyID®, reveals consumers are still at high risk for identity theft, failing to practice even simple safeguards. The survey, fielded to coincide with National Protect Your Identity Week, shows the vast majority of U.S. adults (93 percent) recognize identity theft is a growing problem. Yet, 61 percent feel it would not be very difficult for a person to steal their identity and 67 percent are concerned that identity theft will affect them in the future.

The national study surveyed more than 2,000 consumers on their perceptions and activities related to identity theft. While 89 percent of online U.S. adults say they take steps to secure their digital information, more than half (55 percent) dont always check to see if a Website is secure before shopping online, and more than three out of five adults who have online accounts (63 percent) dont use a unique password for each of their online accounts.

"This survey clearly shows that, while people are more aware and concerned about identity theft, they are not doing what they should to stay protected, especially when it comes to online activities," said Ken Chaplin, senior vice president of marketing for Experians ProtectMyID. "Consumers clearly dont want to become victims, yet they continue to put themselves in danger."

The results also reveal that 92 percent of U.S. adults believe people should be more concerned about identity theft. In addition, 33 percent dont feel confident they are doing enough to protect their identities.

Additional key findings from the survey

Digital devices under-protected - U.S. adults own and use a variety of devices, but more than two in five of those who own a smartphone (43 percent) report they rarely or never use a password to unlock their smartphone. Additionally, 47 percent of adults who own a tablet indicate they rarely or never use a password to unlock their tablets.

Risky shopping - Ninety-one percent of U.S. adults shop online; however, many dont safeguard their credit card information. The survey shows that 57 percent of online shoppers dont always go to sites directly (by typing the name in their web browser), but instead click on links. This action increases the risk of going to a fraudulent site designed to capture the visitors personal information.

Social networking is too social - Among U.S. adults who have a social network profile such as Facebook and Twitter, slightly more than one in three (36 percent) manage their privacy settings on an ongoing basis. Many may be exposing themselves to fraud by allowing certain information to be public, such as educational background (60 percent), date of birth (44 percent), and email address (36 percent).

Real-world scenarios create simple dangers - Twenty-three percent of adults admit they set their purses, bags or jackets containing wallets under the table or behind them on a chair at a restaurant.

Social Security cards can put sensitive information into the wrong hands - Forty-six percent of adults write their Social Security number on job applications, medical forms, etc., and 29 percent say they carry their Social Security card (or a copy of it) in their wallet or purse.

What a hectic weekend! I had the privilege and honor to be invited as a speaker at the first Malaysia-Singapore Conference of Aesthetic Medicine (MSCAM), at Sheraton Imperial Kuala Lumpur. We also got the chance to meet up with the Minister for Health, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, and he was gracious enough to spend a few hours to have lunch with us and share our thoughts and concerns on the field of aesthetic medicine.

The Texas Department of Agriculture Administrative Review of the TJJD National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs (NSLP/SBP) was completed in September 2015 and TJJD earned an excellent report.  There were no findings against the agency and the reviewer said TJJD would receive a certificate of excellence signed by the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.

Last year, only 17 of approximately 500 contracting entities (CEs) reviewed in Texas received an excellent award.  The reviewer said that it is very rare for a residential child care institution to receive an excellent award due to the added challenges. The reviewer was very complimentary of the processes in place in Nutrition and Food Services.  She reported that the reviewers visiting the sites said that the staff was friendly and knowledgeable, that the food served looked very fresh, that there was a good variety of foods served, and that the breakfast and lunch meals met program requirements.

TJJD congratulates Treva Whitehead (Nutrition Services manager) and Lauren Baxter (Nutrition Specialist) for their diligent work. The agency also compliments the facility Nutrition and Food Service staff for their hard work and dedication.

Veteran truckers face with unilateral dermatoheliosis 

William Edward McElligott was a trucker for 28 years, and you dont have to be Sherlock Holmes to be able to tell. The damage from dermatoheliosis is very pronounced on the left side of his face, from exposure to the sun from his side window. On the right side of his face, he looks not much older than his actual age of 69, but the thickening, sagging and nodules on the other side looks like that of a much older person. 

His case was presented in the April 2012 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, and is a very convincing piece of evidence of the negative effects of exposure to the sun. This patients skin condition is consistent with the effects of Favre-Racouchot syndrome, a disorder caused by exposure of the skin to damaging sunlight. 

This kind of damage is typically caused by UVA rays, which are less intense than sunburn-causing UVB rays, but can be up to 50 times more prevalent. Such frequent and prolonged exposure to the sun can also cause DNA mutations that can lead to skin cancer.

This photo is a reminder of the importance of prevention and protection from excessive sun exposure, and the use of at least an SPF 30 sun block at all times is a must. Wearing protective clothing and hats are also important, as is the use of sunglasses to protect the eye and ocular area from photo-aging, especially during the peak sunlight hours of 10am to 4pm.

MEXICO CITY — The scenes are incongruous. Inside the heavily guarded colonial state government building in Michoacán on Monday, a solemn lineup of officials vowed that the federal government would restore authority to a region that has descended into lawlessness.

But a couple of hundred miles away, in Michoacán’s agricultural lowlands, pickup trucks filled with armed men calling themselves self-defense forces have been careening down country roads for the past week, advancing on towns encircling the region’s main city, Apatzingán. They have promised to seize the city, the stronghold of the Knights Templar, the state’s powerful drug gang.

Security analysts have said, however, that these self-defense forces themselves are murky and may even include members of other gangs.

The turmoil in Michoacán — where vigilantes have been battling cartel gunmen on village streets — poses one of the biggest security challenges for President Enrique Peña Nieto, whose focus since taking office a little over a year ago has been on the economy. He concluded his first year in office last month by successfully pushing broad economic changesthrough Congress.

In Morelia, the capital of Michoacán, the Mexican interior minister, Miguel Ángel Osorio Chong, said Monday that the federal government would take charge of security in the “Tierra Caliente,” the region around Apatzingán. “Rest assured that we will contain the violence in Michoacán,” he said, flanked by the secretary of defense and the state governor, who had conceded that the state and local police could not re-establish order.

He also called on the vigilantes to disperse and go home, promising that federal institutions would take charge.

Over the last several days, the government has been sending more and more federal troops and police into the state, in the western part of the country.

But Hipólito Mora, one of the leaders of the self-defense groups, told the local news media that first the government must arrest the leaders of the Knights Templar. “We will hold out,” Mr. Mora told the newspaper El Universal on Monday. “I agree that one day we will have to lay down our weapons, and I would love to go back to work.” He added, “But the government should recognize that this is their failing.”

A year ago, Mr. Peña Nieto planned to steer public attention away from the campaign against the narcotics rings, which had consumed his predecessor, President Felipe Calderón. Beyond a promise to place more attention on social issues and work toward withdrawing the military from the drug war, Mr. Peña Nieto barely mentioned the issue.

Yet in Michoacán, the state where Mr. Calderón first escalated Mexico’s drug war seven years ago, vigilantes began organizing to confront the cartels. Parts of the state — which have a long history of rebellion against central authority — seem to be in the control of a combustible mix of armed groups, and it is unclear where they come from and where their loyalties lie.

“The complexity of the problem lies in the fact that no one knows who is involved in the conflict anymore,” said Esteban Barragán, a professor at the Center for Rural Studies at the College of Michoacán in Zamora. “Who is a genuine vigilante, and who is a member of the Knights Templar cartel or who is just taking advantage of the chaotic situation for a personal vendetta?”

Mr. Peña Nieto first sent troops to Michoacán last May to battle drug violence, and in November the Navy took over operations at the Pacific port of Lázaro Cárdenas, where the Knights Templar had established control.

“Tierra Caliente has become a no man’s land full of personal vendettas, serial kidnappings, forced disappearances, and murders that come and go unnoticed, every day,” Mr. Barragán said.

Mr. Peña Nieto’s “promises not to militarize have fallen by the wayside,” said Bruce M. Bagley, a professor at the University of Miami’s department of international studies. “This requires troops, firepower, resources and sustained attention despite what Peña Nieto says about not wanting to militarize any further.”

Mr. Bagley said the vigilante groups had emerged to fill the “vacuum or void in which citizen security is so precarious” that any armed group can step in.

And he said there were “rumors swirling” that the vigilantes were connected to the Sinaloa Cartel. “It is my firm suspicion that there is a struggle over turf, territory and trafficking,” he added. “I don’t think we could explain how they could obtain their level of firepower so quickly.”

But vigilante leaders have repeatedly argued that they are merely trying to defend their communities.

A smart phone app that allows users to post messages anonymously is coming under fire for fostering cyberbullying, leading to at least two juvenile arrests, school phone-use bans and several campus lockdowns.

Scrutiny of the 4-month-old Yik Yak app for Android and Apple devices has spread from the Southeast to the Northeast to the Midwest and, this week, to the West Coast. 

The app has registered more than 10,000 downloads on Google’s Play Store and, according to AppAnnie, has cracked the top 100 most popular apps on Apple’s App Store. Yik Yak’s creators said a month ago that the app has more than 100,000 users.

Like on Twitter, users can post short blurbs of text. But these “yaks” don’t have any name or user name attached to them. The messages can be read by the 500 "yakkers" who are nearest the writer. The app is free but the writer can can pay to distribute messages to more people over a wider geographic area.

But crude, derogatory and threatening posts sprinkled among trifling conversation have distressed educators.

The website also doesn’t disclose specifics about data it collects from users’ devices or for how long data is stored. A short note simply reads that “we will never require any information from you other than your location.”

The move comes after administrators at Whitney Young High School, New Trier, and Lake Forest High School sent letters to parents warning them of Yik Yak.

The spinning yak promises the latest gossip in a school cafeteria. At Whitney Young High School, an email from administrators Wednesday warned this latest "virtual bathroom wall" had the potential to do great damage, primarily because users arent identified.

"Students were actually coming downstairs to talk to administration and they were mentioning remarks posted and student names that were obvious so of course that is going to impact you," said Asst. Vice Principal Melvin Soto, Whitney Young High School.

The school has blocked Yik Yak on its WiFi, but those with data plans can access it anywhere, anytime. So the objective is to get kids to write with a conscience. Many said they were disturbed by the tone of yik-yak.

Hello dear readers!

Its now the 24th day since Ive delivered, also to say baby Fayth is 24 days old!

Time flies man....in another week shell turn 1 month old. Hehe.

This was 3-day old Fayth - wrapped up before heading home from the hospital.

This is her today, 24-days old. : D

Am now still doing my confinement, lying in bed typing away on my iPad... Just Kena scolding by my confinement nanny this morning saying I shouldnt keep sitting up at my computer table and should be lying down. *opps* anyways, will write up another post on confinement soon... : P

This blog post is dedicated for expecting mummies - JTS on my experience of my last few days being a pregger as well as the D day itself. ; )

When was your EDD?

So..... My EDD was supposedly 22nd September 2015.

When did you start your maternity leave?

My planned maternity leave was supposed to start only on 15th September. But just one visit to my gynae before my D day, my gynae mentioned that my cervix had dilated 2cm and may pop anytime from that day - I got worried and immediately requested for early ML (like one week before my planned date) cuz I didnt want to pop that early (FYI I was 37+ weeks then, preferred to deliver full term). 

What did you do during ML?

So...on 5th September I was officially on ML, rested at home all day watching tv, surfing the net, chit chatting with my MIL and hubby (yes, he went on leave with me). 

About cervix dilation.....?

Even though I would very much prefer to deliver closer to the EDD, I already expected earlier delivery since many mummies on FB preggers group page mentioned that from the time they were advised by their gynae of their cervix opening, most mummies on an average deliver within the next 2-4 days... So thats what happened for me, 5 days later....

Were there signs before your water bag broke?

Back track a little..... During first few days of my ML, as days passed I thought maybe I was the few that could pass 1 or 2 weeks after the slight dilation of my cervix. Then came the 3rd night where I had mild stomach cramps after getting up to pee in the middle of the night (my nightly routine, approx. 2-3am), felt abit like stomach ache where I felt abit like wanting to go to the toilet to poo poo. But shortly after, I fell asleep till the dawn came. Same thing happened on the 4th night, so I started to have a strange feeling but didnt bother too much about it... 

How did your water bag break?

On the 5th night, I woke up at 1:45am and went to pee as usual... Before I got out of the bed, I felt as though some fluid was coming out of my va-jayjay. Went to pee and took a peek at my panty liner and it was clear so I went back to my room. While I was taking a quick sip of water before jumping back into bed, a big gush of water just rushed down my legs and FOR SURE I knew my water bag broke. Hey, I read on some articles saying that water bag leaking or breaking usually isnt like what you see on television bcuz it just usually trickles down.. Hell no! Mine was just like what you see on TV! Haha, no joke! The fluid was so much and so warm, I quickly grabbed tissues to kinda like stuff my crouch area but still flooded below me. My hubby at that time got up to pee as well and when he came back to the room he was half blur and half stunned that my D day had come. Haha! 

What did you do after your water bag broke?

So I did as advised by experienced mummies; grabbed my towel and clean undies, went straight into the shower to bathe and most importantly...wash my hair! Calmly got dressed and packed a handful of fruits and some moon cake to fill myself along the way to the hospital, downed a bottle of chicken essence before heading out, and grabbed my "hospital bag" with me. In the car I ate the fruits, before I could even start on the moon cakes, the contractions kicked in and I just couldnt do anything else but concentrate on my breathing. Then the contractions got more and more intense I started to perspire cold sweat. Woah, the pain........is no joke. Arrived at TMC I got down the car and my hubby requested for a wheel chair from the security guard cuz I was in so much pain I couldnt walk. *sweat*

The very first big decision to make - pain relieve option.

After getting dressed in the hospital gown lying on the bed in the waiting area, the nurse asked if I wanted epidural. Prior to the D day, I told myself I wanted to try natural birth wo epi as I was very afraid of the side effects eg back ache (bcuz I love to exercise, imagine having back ache while working out...pfffft...). So when the nurse asked me the question, i was half hearted. I asked the nurse if the intensity would get much higher then the pain I was already feeling, and she said to me "yes my dear, cuz youre not even half way there" (at that point I was only 4cm dilated). But I told her of my concerns about my fears of backache later on she answered "my grandfather didnt bear children and he has backache".... That made me laugh and gave me a sense of relive to opt for epidural, so yes, I took it... Yes, I chickened out. -.-"

More on Epidural....

It is important to make a clear decision on the delivery method as well as pain relieve option because it takes the anethetist approx. 30 minutes to come to your delivery suite upon you agreeing to it, and the pain relief takes another short while to take effect. The jab for the epi was really painful by the way... If I recall now, it felt sore like acupuncture but x100 bcuz it felt like the needle was so much thicker than the thin acupuncture needles (watch video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=SG&v=uNDcf3Vw1vo&hl=en-GB). It was pain + sore, and it hurts so much when the fluid injects into your back.... Hokay, so much on the horrors for now, after the effect of epi kicked in I felt super comfy - no pain no nothing! The only only side effect I experienced was shivering, like the kind of shivers you get when you feel cold. Other than that, alls fine...I could even take power naps in between the waiting time for my cervix to dilate fully.

It took me 5+ hours to dilate fully (from 4cm) to 10cm (thats where you can start to push). Nurses gave me one hour period to do pushing, and if after that one hour baby was still not coming out I would then have to decide on assistive delivery eg. Forceps, vacuum, etc. 

Labor... How was it like?

I personally did not attend classes for labor preparation so I didnt know what I was gonna expect at all. I did attend CBE (Child Birth Education classes) but only took 3 out of the 6 lessons which did not include topics on labor. But the nurses were all very friendly and taught me breathing techniques and how to push during labor. Basically your contractions come in intervals; 1 minute on, 1 or few minutes off, etc. The nurses advised to push during contractions and rest in between. With epi taken, I basically felt no pain at all that whole time even. Couldnt feel the contractions as well so I was given que when it was time to push. For each time to push, I took in my biggest breath and hugged my thighs (to curl myself up a little to feel as though doing crunches so I could contract my abdominal muscles since lower half of my body was already fully numb since this was the only was I could feel my pushing efforts) and pushed as hard as I could until I was out of breath then exhaled and took another big breath and pushed again. I would repeat this for 4-5 times (depending whether I was out of breath) and that would be effort for one contraction. So it basically goes on and on like this until your baby comes out. One word: shag.

How did you feel as your little one popped?

It was my final push (I could feel it was the last push) and I gave my all (until my face cringed into the centre, haha), my gynae picked up a pair or surgical scissors (if thats how you call it) and snipped my va-jayjay (actual term: perineum) and there....little Fayth came popping out. My very first sentiments on seeing this little human was #1 stunned for a second didnt know how to feel, #2 then stunned for another second thinking how this little human had so much hair, lol!! I didnt feel as touched as I pictured myself to be like sobbing out loud and all, but I sure did feel the joy when I held her in my arms the first time looking at this little human that came out from me. :~)

What now?

After the happy moments, gynae "delivered" my placenta and stitched my down there up while nurses cleaned and weighed & measured baby Fayth. I was sent up to my suite and first thing was to EAT first! Lol... Although I hadnt had any meals in the last 18hours, I didnt feel hungry I think I was more tired than anything. The rest of the time would be resting and baby bonding time. A Lactation consultant came to visit to teach me how to latch baby Fayth on. This is very important cuz you wanna do it correctly and not end up with blistered nips or engorged breasts (mastitis) and baby not having enough just bcuz she couldnt get it out of you properly. Learn while you can in the hospital and master before you head home, cuz after youre home you will be on your own. If and u less you dont have the intention to breast feed then its fine. (Will blog about breast feeding soon too..) 

Happy with her birth weight. 3015, huat ah! Haha. : D

So yes, this basically sums up my entire D day and what I could recall. Hope it gave mummies (or daddies) some insights on what to expect for labor. Now looking back this entire 9 months of my pregnancy journey, till the very last day and the birth of my child and writing this blog post makes me feel rather emotional (tearing already lah). Cant believe all these just happened. Friends who told me they feel scared about being pregnant, I tell them; you will feel prepared when the day comes, for you have been preparing for whole 10 months. Power of a mothers love.

Aurora , IL -January 2, 2013 -For the first time in more than six decades, Aurora finished the year without a single homicide, after years of efforts by police and community groups to end violence between rival gangs in Illinois’ second-largest city. The western Chicago suburb, home to nearly 200,000 people, was homicide-free last year for the first time since 1946.  “That’s amazing,” Aurora Police Chief Greg Thomas told The (Aurora) Beacon-News. “We went through a lot of stuff to get there.”Aurora struggled with gang violence beginning in the 1990s. The city’s homicides peaked at 26 in both 1995 and 1996. As recently as 2007, the city averaged more than one homicide per month.By comparison, Illinois’ third-largest city, Rockford, had 14 homicides in 2012. That was that city’s lowest number since 2004, when there were eight, the Rockford Register Star reported Wednesday.   In Chicago, about 40 miles to the east of Aurora, homicides rose to 506 in 2012.

"8 Slain on B.C.s Bloody Sunday"

British Columbia, Canada - January 13, 2013 -  experienced an especially brutal day, Sunday was the most violent day in recent memory in B.C., with police in four communities investigating the deaths of eight people.

Three men were shot in Surrey in two separate incidents, two men were found dead in Hope, a man and woman were discovered dead in Vanderhoof and one man was fatally stabbed in Nanaimo. RCMP Supt. Brendan Fitzpatrick, with the E Division major crimes section, said it was a very busy weekend for police. "Its nothing that cant be handled at this point. Well just respond accordingly," Fitzpatrick said.

A TRAGIC TIMELINE:

• 2: 30 a.m. Hope - Two men found dead in a home on the 69100-block of Othello Road.
• Time unknown Vanderhoof - Two bodies found dead inside a home Sunday. The pair, Blaine Albert Badfoot, 29, and Tara Lee Ann Williams, 40, are known to police. RCMP Major Crime Unit investigating.
• 1: 45 p.m. Nanaimo - A man found critically ill in a home on 500-block of Fifth Street and later died. (man is charged).
• 7 p.m. Surrey - A man is found in critical condition after being shot near 168th Street and 76th Avenue in targeted hit and later died of injuries. The victim, Manjot Dhillon, 27, is known to police. Integrated Homicide Investigation Team investigating.
• 11: 45 p.m. Surrey - Two men found shot to death in an open parkade at an apartment building at 128th Street and 94th Avenue. Integrated Homicide Investigation Team investigating.

"Bill forces school districts to create gang policy, staff training"

INDIANAPOLIS — A bill that requires school corporations to create a criminal gang policy, and provide educational outreach and training to school employees to identify and prevent gang activity was heard at the Senate Education and Career Development Committee Wednesday.The bill is modeled from a similar law passed in Maryland and would implement policies to help teachers and school employees identify gang members in the school.

Many prosecuting attorneys and the Indiana School Board Association support the bill, which will help providegang identification training.

“Gangs are becoming increasingly involved in smaller schools,” said Frank Bush of the Indiana School Board Association. “It’s not just isolated to larger schools. And I think a law like this would really help bring together a lot of resources for smaller schools to use.”

Some are concerned with a part of the bill that would require school employees to report activities that could not be a part of gang activity. The school could accidentally report students who are not active in gangs, but could end up in the juvenile system.

“When you’re try to figure out who’s a gang member and who isn’t a gang member,” said Jaunae Hanger, an attorney who specializes in juvenile justice, “your own biases really come into play if you don’t have cultural competency training.”

She adds that there are number of great ideas, that include intervention and prevention, but warns about unintended consequences.

“We have to be really cautious that we don’t continue to negatively impact the children who we’re trying to help,” said Carole Craig of the Indianapolis National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Nearly 70 gangs in central Fla., Orange Co. officials

Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings announced

Monday that there are nearly 70 gangs committing crimes on central Florida streets.

Just 17 years old, West Orange High School shooting suspect Jmorian Bell is already a documented gang member.

Deputies are trying to figure out whether those gang ties led to 15-year-old Jerodrick Smith being shot three times.

The incident prompted the countys top brass to hold a major press conference Monday.

"Here in Orange County weve documented in our law enforcement community about 67 different gangs, and over 1,200 of them in the county," Demings said. "Over 1,200 members."

9 Investigates first exposed the growing gang problem in central Florida last month, and at the time Eyewitness News couldnt get any law enforcement agency to talk about the issue.

"We do have gangs in Orange County we cant hide our heads in the sand and make believe it doesnt," Capt. Angelo Nieves with Orange County Sheriffs Office said.

Orange Countys 67 gangs are just a fraction of the 1,664 gangs known to law enforcement statewide – a 1.6 percent increase from last year.

Membership is going up, too.

There are nearly 53,000 gang members in Florida, up 1.5 percent over the prior year.

Sheriffs deputies said some of those 1,200 documented members, like Bell, go to school with local kids.

"Those affiliations dont stop at the school door and thats one of the things we work very closely with," Nieves said.

Chicago park shootings: 13 in critical condition after gang violence

Thirteen people, including a 3-year-old boy, were wounded during a late-night attack in a south side Chicago park on Thursday in what police say was a gang-related shooting.

Two gunmen opened fire on a group gathered on a basketball court in the Back of Yards neighborhood about 10:15 p.m., according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Three victims are in critical condition, including the 3-year-old, Deonta Howard, according to an AP report.

The boy’s uncle, Julian Harris, said dreadlocked gunmen in a gray sedan fired at him on the corner of Wood and 51st before shooting up the nearby Cornell Square Park.

“They hit the light pole next to me, but I ducked down and ran into the house,” Mr. Harris said to the Sun Times. "They’ve been coming ‘round here looking for people to shoot every night – just gang-banging stuff. It’s what they do.”

Police have not discussed the details of the shooting, though they have said the violence was gang-related, according to the Sun Times.

A police department spokesman said no arrests have been made in the shooting, and victims were being interviewed to try to determine the circumstances of the attack.

About 60 police officers were on the scene at the peak of activity.

This attack is part of a recent spike in gun violence in Chicago originating from hundreds of gang factions established in block-by-block territories on the south and west sides of the city. An outpouring of gun-related violence over Labor Day weekend resulted in eight deaths and more than 20 injuries.

Chicago police have lately been flooding crime "hot spots" with extra patrols and manpower, in a bid to curb the rampant street violence. The number of homicides in Chicago topped 500 last year, making 2012 the deadliest year in the city since 2008. A recent FBI crime report shows that the Windy Citys murder rate is disproportionately high compared with many other cities. New York City, where the population is three times that of Chicago, recorded 419 murders in 2012.

Francis John, who has lived in the Back of the Yards neighborhood since 1983, told the Sun Times she was surprised by the Thursday shootings. The neighborhood has gone from good, to bad, to better during her time living there, she said.

Ms. John was upstairs in her apartment near the park when she heard gunfire. “It was a lot of boom, boom, boom.” John then went outside to see what had happened. “A lot of youngsters were running scared,” she said.

“People are watching the community,” John said, referencing new police watch efforts at Chicago crime hot spots. “I thought [the shootings] were over. But despite this incident, it’s not as bad as it used to be.”

By 12:30 a.m. Friday, police investigators had finished combing the crime scene. About two hours after the shooting, Chicago firefighters began cleaning blood from the basketball court at the park.

Denver Police: Gang-related violence near doubles this year.

The number of gang-related violent crimes in Denver has nearly doubled in the first four months of this year, despite a police program aimed at encouraging gangsters to lead more peaceful lives.

The overall number of gang-related or gang-motivated offenses has remained nearly steady in the first four months of this year compared with 2012, but police department figures show an increased percentage of violent gang-related crimes. Aggravated assaults, for example, have more than doubled, from 47 between Jan. 1 and April 22, 2012, to 107 during the same period this year. In the first four months of 2012, there were 72 gang-related crimes against people; in that same period this year there have been 132.

Police officials say it is too soon to gauge the success of the far-reaching Ceasefire program and that the numbers dont tell the entire story....

Chicago, IL - September 2013Heroin Pushed on Chicago Fueling Gang Murders

The two Mexican couriers were hauling a tractor-trailer full of cash: $3 million collected for drugs sold on the streets of Chicago. Juan Gonzalez and David Zuniga were driving their rig through Indiana in October 2011, transporting the money to Mexico. As they stopped to fix a flat tire, three members of the Gangster Disciples, Chicago’s biggest street gang, held them up at gunpoint.

Brooklyn, New York - December 2013Teen Convictred of Murder for Gunning down rival gangbanger

A teenage Brooklyn girl with a fitting nickname was convicted of murder Monday for gunning down a rival gangbanger in Browsville in 2011 — when the shooter was just 16 years old.

Sahiah “Uzi” Davis, now 18, blasted Nathaniel Walcott with a handgun as part of an ongoing beef between the Wave Gang and the Hood Stars, a witness testified during her Brooklyn Supreme Court trial.

“It was a way the Hood Stars greeted themselves,” the witness testified at trial, referring to how victim Nathaniel Walcott yelled out “Choo,” a gang call, before he was killed.

At the time of the murder Davis had just completed her freshman year at George Westinghouse HS in Downtown Brooklyn, where she played basketball and skipped on the school’s co-ed jumprope team.

She faces 25 to life behind bars when she is sentenced December 18

Oklahoma city and one other city listed as worst in drive by gang violence

OKLAHOMA CITY -Oklahoma City was also tops among the five for percentage of gang murders committed via drive-by.

According to the CDC, “With regard to the circumstances preceding the homicide, drive-by shootings were significantly more likely to contribute to gang homicides than other types of homicide in Los Angeles and Oklahoma City. Nearly one quarter of gang homicides in these cities were drive-by shootings, compared with 1%–6% of non-gang homicides.”

The National Violent Death Reporting System also has Oklahoma listed as one of 5 states with the most gang homicides.

CDC lists Oakland, Oklahoma City, Long beach, Los Angeles and Newark to be the U.S. capitols of gang homicides.

“In these cities, a total of 856 gang and 2,077 non-gang homicides were identified and included in the analysis. Comparisons of the characteristics of gang and non-gang homicides were made using Fisher’s exact tests for all the variables except mean age, which required a T-Test. The characteristics included basic demographics of the victims, descriptive information on the homicide event, and circumstances precipitating the event,” according to CDC.

Gangs are associated with drug trade, homicides that were both drug and gang-related were less common than those involved in drugs alone.

“Gang homicides also were more likely to occur in the afternoon/evening hours in the majority of the five cities; however, comparisons were not examined because the data were missing for 23% of non-gang homicide incidents. In Oklahoma City, gang homicides occurred more frequently on weekend than did non-gang homicides.”

Wilmington, North Carolina - October 30, 2013
City to hold public meetings addressing gang violence

WILMINGTON | During the next three months, the city of Wilmington will host public meetings to address gang violence.

The meetings are designed to identify short and long-term strategies that can reduce gang violence, according to a news release. The first meeting will be from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Monday in city hall, 102 N. Third St.

Nearly 300 people representing organizations including nonprofits, law enforcement, businesses, churches and educational institutions have been invited.

The first meeting is designed to define issues that need to be addressed while subsequent meetings will focus on solutions and implementation. In the release, City Manager Sterling Cheatham said law enforcement is only part of the solution.

"What we are trying to do is help coordinate efforts from all sectors of our community and focus their resources to help stop gang violence where it starts," Cheatham said.
