diy airbrush tattoo ink | Hepatitis C triples in the Appalachian states due to intravenous drugusage as per CDC reports

,

diy airbrush tattoo ink

The chances of Hepatitis C has jumped thrice in the four Appalachian states in the instance of hepatitis C. This came up in the study conducted by the US Centers of Diseases Control and Prevention.

The CDC scanned the time zone between 2006 and 2012 and hepatitis C infections were on the rise in rural areas of Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia. This increased the rate by 364 percent and the incidence of hepatitis C was highest reported in the age group below 30.  The reason that hepatitis C was due to intravenous drug usage that was rampant. In the same time, hospital
admissions for the treatment of opioid dependency jumped from 21.1 percent in the said states. In fact going with the facts and figures, close to 44.8% of the 1,377 fresh instances were reported in the age group below 30. This led to confirmed reports that the incidence was highest in the 30 age group which sees the maximum incidence of hepatitis C.

The main reasons for this were substance use treatment that the natives of these places were subject to. The increase in heroin use in these states matched the national census that talked of first-time heroin use from 90,000 people in 2006 to close to 156,000 in 2012. The latest figures supporting the claims of the study was reported.

The rate of HIV or infection among the young target group who inject drugs in Central Apalachia is quite low as compared to the figures in the four states.  Hepatitis C is the most common infection that is blood-borne and affects close to 3 million people.

The report was published in the May 8 edition of the morbidity and mortality weekly report.

homemade tattoo removal at home | Beyond The Hair Showing Some Love to Your Scalp

,

homemade tattoo removal at home

Sometimes we are so concerned about the skin that people see every day that we forget about the skin they might not see. The upkeep of the skin on your scalp is just as important as the skin on your face, arms and legs. Below are some topics of concern when it comes to scalp heath:

Sun Exposure/Heat
Over exposure to UV rays is dangerous for any area of skin, and your scalp is no exception. Because most scalps are covered with hair, the skin often lacks the protective resistance built up by skin in other areas. Hair does act as a barrier in some capacity, but it does not protect the skin from all harmful UV rays. The best way to protect your scalp from the sun is by wearing a hat. People who are balding or who have thinning hair should be especially conscious of the sun’s effect on their exposed scalp. Protect exposed skin on your scalp with sunscreen if possible.

Along the same line as sun exposure, excessive heat can negatively affect the skin on your scalp. Avoid holding styling tools that use heat, like hairdryers, curling irons and straighteners, too close to your scalp. Excessive heat deprives your scalp of moisture and strips it of natural lipids. Without moisture and natural lipids, your scalp can become dry and itchy.

Hair Products
Dyes, relaxers and washes can help your hair look the way you want it to, but they can also damage the skin underneath. Whether you are using these products at home or seeking out a professional’s skills, you should always test the product you are using on a small patch of skin first to see how your will skin react. A burning, itchy reaction is a clear sign to not use the product.

You may not have a reaction to harsh hair products at first, but be aware of the effects on your scalp after repeated use. Continuous use of harsh hair products can result in long-term effects like dry or raw skin, along with redness and hair loss.

Diet
Although diet doesn’t play a large factor in scalp health, it can still affect it. Niacin, biotin, zinc and vitamins A, B6 and C all are nutrients that have been shown to positively impact scalp health. Incorporating fish, nuts, seeds, whole grains and dark leafy greens into your diet will help ensure a healthy intake of all of these nutrients.

Dandruff
All of the above topics play into the most common scalp health concern: dandruff. Dandruff is not contagious and in most cases is easy to treat. For mild cases, try shampooing with a gentle cleanser daily in addition to taking all the preventive measures discussed above. If the dandruff still persists, consider consulting a dermatologist about the issue. You may need a medicated shampoo.

It may seem daunting to remember the upkeep for skin care, but key topics repeat themselves. Sun protection, product usage and diet are factors that affect the health of your skin no matter where it is on your body.

Next time you have a concern about your scalp health, consider what measures you are taking to ensure the health of the skin on your face, arms and legs. Are you giving your scalp the same attention?

Have any questions not addressed in this post? Leave it in the comments and I’ll try to help!

diy bachelorette tattoo | Family Acceptance Key to Curbing Teen Suicides

,

diy bachelorette tattoo

Family rejection could be potentially deadly for teens already at risk for suicide, a new study has found.

When teens were followed six months after discharge from a psychiatric unit for attempting suicide, the majority of boys and girls reported feeling family or peer "invalidation" at the time of discharge.

"Family invalidation refers to a lack of acceptance of individuals sense of self and their emotions," said lead researcher Shirley Yen, an associate professor of psychiatry at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University in Providence, R.I. "This could mean
anything from not accepting an aspect of their childs identity or preferences, such as sexuality, to telling their child they should not feel the way they do, such as feeling depressed or anxious."

Yen said that parents may actually be supportive of their teens in other ways but could still inadvertently contribute to a sense of invalidation. Peer invalidation, she said, is similar in that the teen feels a "lack of acceptance of the teens identity, thoughts or feelings."

Although the current study found an association between a lack of family or peer acceptance and suicide and self-harm risk, the study doesnt prove these factors were a direct cause of these behaviors. The researchers note that other factors -- such as bullying or the self-acceptance of sexual orientation -- could also have played a role in suicide attempts and self-harm.

For the current study, Yens team tracked 99 teenagers for six months after they had been discharged from a hospitals psychiatric unit for suicide risk, either due to self-harm, a suicide attempt or suicidal thoughts.

On a weekly basis, the teens were asked whether they felt accepted by their family and peers. They were also asked if they were able to express their true thoughts and feelings without being dismissed, punished, ignored or mocked.

Girls were more likely to perceive rejection from their families at the start of the study. But it was boys perception of family rejection that increased their risk of suicide attempts, according to the study.

After researchers made adjustments to account for other known suicide risk factors among the participants, boys with feelings of invalidation from their families were almost four times more likely to attempt suicide than boys who didnt feel rejected.

And the longer boys felt rejected, the more likely they were to attempt suicide. The study found that boys who felt rejected most often during the follow-up were eight times more likely to attempt suicide than those who felt accepted by their families.

Both boys and girls who felt rejected by their peers at the start of the study were more likely to self-harm, such as cutting, than those who felt peer acceptance.

Among just girls, the odds of self-harm were 86 percent higher if they felt peer invalidation. The results for boys alone varied so greatly that they did not reach statistical significance for self-harming behaviors, according to the study.

Although the study analysis took race into account, cultural and ethnic differences may still have implications for these findings, suggested Susan De Luca, an associate professor of social work at the University of Texas at Austin.

Latino teens, for example, may think of cousins around their age as family members rather than peers even though support from that group would be a type of peer support, she said. She also noted that the study did not allow the researchers to tease out specifics related to relationships with different family members, such as a teens relationship with one parent versus the other.

"At least with my research with Latina adolescent suicide attempters, we find that a fight with mother is a strong predictor of a suicide attempt," she said. "So this might be fresh in their mind while they are an in-patient and then state a little too simplistically that they are not validated by family."

Although this study did not investigate the participants sexual orientation, gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender teens comprise one of the highest risk groups for suicide, De Luca said. "Many LGBTQ kids have tense or [conflicting] relationships with their family members and this [studys findings] might help explain some of the higher rates of LGBTQ suicidal behaviors," she said.

Teens who are having thoughts of suicide or self-harm can get help by calling one of two national suicide hotlines: 1-800-SUICIDE (1-800-784-2433) or 1-800-273-TALK (1-800-273-8255).

Parents who are concerned their child is at risk for suicide should do what they can to "suicide-proof" their home, Yen said, by removing firearms, sharp objects, large quantities of pills and other substances that teens could use for a suicide attempt.

However, she said, suicide "is exceedingly difficult to predict because not all teens exhibit the classic warning signs."

"Parents and loved ones should watch for depression and hopelessness, change in behaviors, particularly decreased sleep, giving away of possessions and increase in substance use," Yen said. Self-harm behaviors may be a little easier to spot, she added.

"The most common self-harm behavior is cutting, and such behaviors typically leave scars on hands, arms and legs," she said. "Teens will often dress in a way to hide their scars, such as wearing excessive jewelry or long sleeves even on warm days."

The researchers reported their findings online recently in the Journal of Child and Adolescent Psychopharmacology. The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health.

diy tattoo book | Underage alcohol consumption among most serious health hazards to youth

,

diy tattoo book

The drug of choice used most frequently by American teenagers is alcohol. It is consumed more frequently than all other illicit drugs combined, and is the drug most likely to be associated with injury or death. April is Alcohol Awareness Month and a good time to bring awareness to this growing problem.

Too many teens, and their parents, view drinking as almost a “rite of passage” and harmless as long as the teen doesn’t drink and drive. That is an attitude that needs to change. Alcohol is a powerful, mind-altering drug that affects the brain and all of the developing organs. Alcohol is involved in teen auto crashes, sexually transmitted diseases, homicides, and suicides.

We’re seeing younger and younger children using alcohol. A child who starts drinking before the age
of 15 is four times as likely to develop alcoholism in adulthood as children who wait to consume alcohol until the legal age of 21. Some children in elementary or middle school are already using alcohol, so parents need to have a series of discussions with their child tailored to their child’s developmental stage. The younger a child is when they begin using alcohol, the more likely it is to lead to violence, other drug usage and the potential for alcoholism later.

Binge drinking is a big concern for many parents. Alcohol poisoning is a very real threat that can be fatal if someone consumes large enough quantities rapidly. Contrary to popular belief, binge drinking typically starts in high school rather than on college campuses. But, parents can make a huge difference. The number one reason cited by teens that choose not to drink is their parents. When parents talk to teens about drinking, the teens really do listen.

College students spend more on alcohol than they do on soft drinks, milk, juice, coffee and books combine. Investigate the college your child will attend and find out the local laws and campus alcohol policies. Consider visiting the campus on a Friday or Saturday night to observe the behavior of the students. Stay involved with your child and be aware of changes in grades, friends, or attitudes toward classes and studying. Even college students who choose not to drink may face challenges on campuses where drinking is heavy because of risks ranging from annoyances such as vandalism to the threat of increased violence.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence shared the following statistics:

  • There are more deaths and disabilities each year in the U.S. from substance abuse than from any other cause.
  • About 18 million Americans have alcohol problems; only 5-6 million Americans have drug problems.
  • Fetal alcohol syndrome is the leading cause of mental retardation.
  • Heavy drinking contributes to the top three causes of death: heart disease, cancer and stroke.
  • Drinking contributes significantly to other health problems.

In addition, alcohol plays a role in:

  • One quarter of all emergency room admissions.
  • One third of all suicides.
  • More than half of all homicides.
  • More than half of all incidents of domestic abuse.
  • Almost half of all traffic fatalities.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence provides extremely helpful information on their website, www.ncadd.org.

diy tattoo choker string | Keys to good parenting

,

diy tattoo choker string

SANDY, UTAH — When a child misbehaves, parents want the behavior to stop. Immediately.
So they tell their children things like “Don’t do that!” or they level a consequence.
“Punishment may stop the behavior, but it doesn’t teach the child what to do instead,” says Denise Kimber of Utah Youth Village.
Kimber and Jeanette Sayers teach parents skills to change the behaviors of troubled children through the nonprofit organization’s Family First program.
They conduct intensive in-home interventions, spending eight to 10 hours a week in a family’s home teaching parents to change their child’s destructive behaviors and to maintain discipline without anger or violence.
On Wednesday, Kimber and Sayers shared some of those skills with adoptive parents, foster parents and professionals attending the Utah Adoption Council’s annual conference at the South Towne Exposition Center. The conference concludes Thursday.
“The reality is you are the experienced parents. We’re like Home Depot. We’re going to give you the tools, and you’ll use them,” Sayers said.
Kimber, who is a mother, stepmother and grandmother, said children as young as 3 understand consequences.
“One of our goals as parents is to give children messages they understand,” she said.
For instance, when a parent takes a young child to the grocery store, they need to communicate their expectations.
Telling the child he needs to "be good" is too vague.
"Good to a 30-year-old mother is not the same as good to a 3-year-old kid,” Kimber said.
It’s more productive to explain that “good” means no yelling, no hitting or no screaming for candy.
When children misbehave, there should be negative consequences. But when their behavior is appropriate, they should be rewarded with positive consequences, Sayers said.
Examples of negative consequences are requiring a child to do additional chores such as wiping the baseboards or sweeping the kitchen floor.
Positive consequences, meanwhile, could include allowing the child to select what movie the family watches, choose their own outfit or pick a place to eat.
Whether consequences are positive or negative, they need to be implemented immediately and consistently, and the consequence has to mean something to the child, Sayers said.
Kimber said mothers and fathers who level only negative consequences teach their children to avoid them as parents.
“When you punish a lot, you become a negative consequence on your own,” she said.
For families that do not require intensive interventions, Utah Youth Village offers monthly parenting classes.
In a few months, the nonprofit plans to roll out an interactive website that will provide many of the techniques family specialists teach parents through the Families First program, Sayers said.
"Were experts with the skills," Kimber said. "But I also tell parents theyre the experts of their families."

diy eyebrow tattoo removal | Counselor gets 120 days for showing kids porn

,

diy eyebrow tattoo removal

ST. GEORGE — A counselor at a LaVerkin facility for troubled youth was sentenced to 120 days in jail Tuesday for showing personal videos of sexual behavior to boys being housed at the institution.

Donald M. Brown Jr., 48, pleaded guilty in August to five felony counts of offering harmful material to a minor as part of an agreement that dismissed five other charges, but acknowledged in the 5th District Court
hearing that he had written a letter to the court in which he claimed the charges were racially motivated.

“I was a little frustrated because some of (the accusations are) true and some of it is not,” Brown, an African-American, told Judge Eric Ludlow. “The statement I wrote I did out of frustration. I apologize and I’d just like to move on.”

Brown said he discussed the videos with the youth, contradicting an investigator’s statement that Brown admitted the youths had seen pornography on his phone “several times, but every time was an accident” and that “a LOT of accidents” took place.

Deputy County Attorney Zachary Weiland expressed concern that Brown was not taking responsibility for his actions, and Ludlow added that he was troubled by Brown’s statements.

“I don’t think you’ve come clean, quite frankly,” the judge said.

Under questioning about whether Brown was disputing his guilty pleas, and after further discussion with defense attorney Ryan Stout, Brown added, “I admit to it and I apologize.”

Brown could have faced up to five years in prison for each charge, but pre-sentencing investigators recommended the 120-day sentence based in part on Brown’s lack of prior criminal history and compliance with court instructions.

“He … grew up on the rough side of Chicago,” Stout said, asking Ludlow to keep Brown out of jail so he could keep his job. “He’s a man that’s proud of his lack of criminal history. He’s got a lot of friends walking around with convictions. … Mr. Brown’s done a fantastic job of staying out of trouble.”

Stout said Brown has found a job since being fired from the Youth Foundation Success Academy, a youth facility that is an outgrowth of the Cross Creek Programs and Horizon Academy.
Stout asked that any sentence allow him to continue working at his new job

Brown’s wife, who acknowledged being part of the threesome shown in the videos, was also employed at the youth facility, but Stout said Brown is now the family’s sole provider.Ludlow agreed with the recommended four-month jail sentence, however, granting Brown credit for 17 days served. Ludlow also denied Stout’s request for Brown to turn himself in by the weekend and instead ordered Brown taken into custody immediately.

Ludlow said he was not inclined to be lenient because multiple victims were involved and the victims were “particularly vulnerable,” noting Brown’s position of authority over them.
Behavior like this should not be tolerated.

diy tattoo choker easy | Energy use linked to bad behavior in youth

,

diy tattoo choker easy

Youth consuming energy drinks were more likely to play video games for hours, drink sugar-sweetened beverages, and smoke, according to a new study published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

Researchers for the study, published in the May/June issue of the academic journal, surveyed about 2,800 adolescents from grades 6 through 12 in the Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota region. The classroom survey
asked students about their sports drink and energy drink consumption, as well as other behaviors.

According to a LiveScience article, 38 percent of those surveyed said they consumed sports drinks at least once a week, while 15 percent said they consumed energy drinks at least once per week.

On average, teens who consumed sports drinks or energy drinks at least once per week played more hours of video games, drank more servings of sugar-sweetened beverages, and were more likely to have tried smoking, than those who consumed sports drinks or energy drinks less than once per week.

Boys who drank energy drinks at least once per week spent on average four more hours playing video games than boys who drank energy drinks less often. About 20 percent of boys and girls who consumed energy drinks frequently said they had smoked cigarettes, compared to eight percent of those who did not consume energy drinks as frequently.

Researchers write that the findings “are troubling because they may indicate a clustering of problem behaviors among some adolescents.”

But because the study was conducted all at once, there is no way to prove that consuming sports drinks and energy drinks caused these behaviors. Researchers cannot say which came first—the sports and energy drink consumption or the unhealthy behaviors.

“Based on this study, we can’t blame the sports and energy drinks at all,” Dr. Jason Block, an assistant professor of population medicine at Harvard Medical School who was not involved in the study, told LiveScience. “It’s just that adolescents who aren’t focused on healthy behaviors are more likely to consume these beverages.”

Researchers said that future studies that follow teens over time are needed to determine the reason for the link.

homemade tattoo stencil adhesive | Fade to grey

Well, since my last post, the black areas have faded to a faint grey now. They should not require many more sessions until all the black has gone. The new laser is fantastic. Apparently, there are only two of this kind in the country. Even on the very faint black areas, the laser still picks up the ink and there is a satisfying popping as it reacts with the ink. Still got the blues and greens, but, maybe, this new laser, in time, will work its magic on those colours, too.

youtube diy tattoo choker | PAWS Program Needs Your Help!

,

youtube diy tattoo choker

TJJD’s PAWS (Pairing Achievement With Success) Program is in urgent need of large dog kennels.  Our youth trainers currently have a full house of canine companions that are in training for their American Kennel Club (AKC) Canine Good Citizenship certification.  This program began in January 2010 and we had an initial donation of crates that, through normal wear and tear, have become damaged and pose a safety risk for the dogs currently in the program.  Because there is no way to predict the size of dogs we get from our partners at the Corinne T. Smith Animal Shelter and Service Dogs Inc., the large crates are best suited for all the dogs coming into the program.

Crates need to be large enough for the dog to stand up and turn around.  These have proven to be the best for the type of use the PAWS program needs in terms of durability and value.  They are also the best for safety.  The two-door model pictured here provides flexibility in how they are placed in the youth’s room.

If you would like to assist the youth and dogs in this program, send us a message through Facebook and we’ll put you in touch with the program managers!

diy dark mark tattoo | Ex prostitute testifies in sex trafficking trial

,

diy dark mark tattoo

He told her she was beautiful and had a future as a model. He said that at just 17, she was already his "top-notch bitch."
In a federal courtroom Tuesday, the former prostitute, now 21, barely glanced at the pimp she knew as Casino, describing for jurors how he kept her in line by preaching loyalty, coaxing her ego and preying on her vulnerabilities.
"He made me feel good," the woman, whose first name is Kaitlin, testified in a soft but confident voice. "It made me feel like I was important. That somebody needed me."
Sitting a few feet away in a gray sweater and black eyeglasses, McKenzie "Casino" Carson frowned as he scribbled notes on a yellow legal pad.
Kaitlin, whom the Tribune is not identifying because she was underage at the time, was the first of Carsons four alleged victims who will testify at his trial on four counts of sex trafficking. Prosecutors painted Carson as a "master manipulator" who used everything from sweet talk to threats and beatings to coerce runaways and drug addicts into lives of prostitution.
Once he had the women under his thumb, Carson essentially ran their lives, posting sex ads on the Internet and keeping them in dingy suburban motels, prosecutors said. Carson then kept all or a portion of the proceeds for himself.
When the women got out of line, Carson would whip them with a belt and rape them while the others were forced to watch, prosecutors said. Jurors are expected to view explicit photos of the abuse seized from Carsons phone and computer as well as detailed diary entries the victims were forced to make listing the men they had sex with and how much they were paid.
In her opening statement Monday, Carsons attorney, Ellen Domph, urged jurors to put aside any disgust they might feel over the graphic evidence and focus on whether the prosecution proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. She said the alleged victims — most of whom are drug addicts with criminal records of their own — were "smart and wily and know how to get what they want."
"They lie about everything," Domph said. "The evidence will show some of them made their living by lying."
In her testimony, Kaitlin said she was introduced to Carson in a Joliet motel in late 2009 by a mutual friend who said Carson was looking for women who wanted to make some extra money modeling. Twisting in the witness chair with bright pink hair, Kaitlin broke down as she testified how Carson brought her into a bathroom and told her she had to show him what she could do, then forced her to engage in sex.
Over the next several months, Kaitlin worked under the name "Amber" on and off for Carson, who moved operations from motel to motel to keep a step ahead of police.
Kaitlin said Carson knew she was underage, even asking her to produce her ID to prove it.
"He said it was all right, wed just have to keep it under the radar until I turned 18," she said.
Carson is the latest in a string of alleged street pimps to be charged in federal court. Several have been sentenced to lengthy prison terms.

homemade tattoo carbon paper | How To Age Like A Celebrity And Look 30 Forever

,

homemade tattoo carbon paper

There are some lucky people who never seem to face the ravages of time. Celebrities like Madonna, Tina Turner and Demi Moore are some examples, and despite being over 50, they manage look better than people 20 years their junior.

Christie-brinkley-aging-timeline-1
Christy Brinkley will celebrate her 58th birthday this year, but  her looks remain forever 30.

Aging is a process that is greatly affected by genes, environment, sleep habits and diet to name just a few factors, but since this is a cosmetic medicine blog, and my patients come to me to reverse the effects of time rather than prevent them, lets examine exactly how a face ages.

As the face ages, it undergoes significant and visibly identifiable changes

As the face ages, it undergoes significant and visibly identifiable changes. It begins with weathering of the skin, and changes to the texture, transluscence and variance in skin colour in the mid twenties. By the mid thirties, furrows and lines are visible in forehead and near the eyes. Loss of fat from the temples and upper cheeks may show by the age of forty, and the undereye area is one tell-tale sign of aging as the skin begins to sag and pouch. The neckline is also an age giveaway as it becomes loose and baggy during the fifties. By the sixties, the skin is noticeably lined and very loose and saggy as the cheek fat atrophies.

How to Turn Back The Clock

1. Loss of volume
Lipoatrophy, the loss of fat in the underlying facial structures means the facial skin begins to sag, the cheeks become sunken and gaunt, facial shadows become more pronounced and lips become flatter and thinner, jowls appear on the sides of the face, and the neckline is visibly looser.

The Fix: Thread lifting, fillers, Thermage

Thread lifting for jowls and sunken cheeks

Fillers for deep lines and for plumping cheeks, lips and sunken areas

Thermage for overall facial rejuvenation and collagen remodelling

2. Skin texture and pigmentation

Environmental effects such as sun exposure and air pollution, as well as hormonal changes and effects of diet all play a part in the appearance of the skin as we age. The skin also gets thinner and fine lines appear, while melanin deposits and surface damage all contribute to obscure the glow of healthy, young skin.

The Fix: Skin resurfacing

3. Wrinkles and lines

Wrinkles appear in forehead, eye, cheek and around the mouth, as a result of the loss of fat and also due to constant muscle movements.

The fix: Botulinum-A injections

There are many exciting techniques for holding back the ravages of time, and ensuring you look your best, even into your 50s and 60s. These treatments are best used in combination, for a natural look that is purely you, but just younger, brighter and refreshed, so you too, can look and feel like a star, no matter your age.

diy tattoo aftercare balm | Clemson study poor sleep habits lead to dangerous behavior

,

diy tattoo aftercare balm

CLEMSON UNIVERSITY — Poor sleep habits can have a negative effect on self-control, which presents risks to individuals’ personal and professional lives, according to Clemson University researchers.

In a study titled “Interactions between Sleep Habits and Self-Control,” Clemson psychologists concluded a sleep-deprived individual is at increased risk for succumbing to impulsive desires, inattentiveness and questionable decision-making.

“Self-control is part of daily decision-making. When presented with conflicting desires and opportunities, self-control allows one to maintain control,” said June Pilcher, Clemson Alumni Distinguished Professor of psychology, one of four authors of the study. “Our study explored how sleep habits and self-control are interwoven and how sleep habits and self-control may work together to affect a person’s daily functioning.”

Other Clemson researchers included Drew Morris, a human factors psychology Ph.D. candidate; Janet Donnelly, a Ph.D. candidate in industrial/organizational psychology; and Hayley B. Feigl, who has a Bachelor of Science in psychology.

Previous research has shown individuals working in today’s 24-hour-a-day global economy often times sleep less or at irregular times, resulting in poor sleep and chronic sleep loss, which affects decision-making.

“Exercising self-control allows one to make better choices when presented with conflicting desires and opportunities. That has far-reaching implications to a person’s career and personal life,” Pilcher said.

Poor sleep habits, which include inconsistent sleep times and not enough hours of sleep, can also lead to health problems, including weight gain, hypertension and illness, according to prior research. Studies have also found that sleep deprivation decreases self-control but increases hostility in people, which can create problems in the workplace and at home,” Pilcher said.

Better sleep habits can contribute to a more stable level of daily energy reserves, research has indicated. Availability of energy can refuel a person’s ability to make more difficult choices rather than opting for the easier choice or the easier task.

“Many aspects of our daily lives can be affected by better-managed sleep and self-control capacity,” Pilcher said. “Improved health and worker performance are two potential benefits, but societal issues such as addictions, excessive gambling and over spending could also be more controllable when sleep deficiencies aren’t interfering with one’s decision making.”

diy henna tattoo kit australia | Former Youth Return to Giddings With Thanks

,

diy henna tattoo kit australia

At a September 16 reunion at the Giddings State School, approximately 40 former Giddings youth returned to thank former and current staff who worked with them to turn their lives around and deliver a message of hope to current Giddings residents.  The reunion was an effort by Charleston White and the Hyped about HYPE (Helping Youth People Excel) Youth Outreach organization.

White was 14 when he and a group of teenagers were found responsible for the death of a man during a robbery.  He was committed to one of TJJD’s predecessor agency, the Texas Youth Commission, until his 21st birthday.  During that time, White admits that he was a difficult youth, often involved in disturbances and fights.  But he acknowledges that he was given a second chance during that time, and that the influences of the adults he interacted with daily while at Giddings was instrumental in his 180 degree turnaround.  White has since dedicated his activities to reaching out to other at-risk and incarcerated youth, encouraging them with his personal success story and the idea that it is never too late to turn your life around.

During the morning-long assembly in the Giddings gymnasium, these former youth, many of whom travelled from across Texas to be there, talked about their life-changing time at Giddings and how they were able to turn their lives around.  All speakers described familiar patterns in their lives leading up to their Giddings stay – neglected at home, a lack of empathy and respect, hanging out with the wrong crowds and an inability to connect with society.  Most acknowledged they were at Giddings for truly horrific crimes and were unable to fully grasp their true impact of their actions.  All cited their time at the Giddings campus and, more specifically the people who worked with them on a daily basis, as a pivotal period of their lives which enabled them to move forward, become mothers and fathers, and play productive roles in their communities.

The returnees also spoke directly to the staff and former staff that were assembled to hear them speak.  Nearly every speaker spoke of a specific staff member who stood with them during their incarceration, providing tough love, guidance and hope when those qualities were most needed.

Current Giddings youth also heard the HYPE message about the possibility of redemption and the importance of using their time in TJJD to develop the tools that will serve them when they return to their communities.

“It’s not too late for you,” White said.  “No one is exempt from God’s love.”

easy diy tattoo removal | Many consumers fear identity theft yet still engage in risky behavior

Experians ProtectMyID® exposes a disconnect between what people know about identity theft risks and what they actually are doing to protect themselves

COSTA MESA, Calif., Oct. 21, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A new online survey by Harris Interactive, conducted for Experians ProtectMyID®, reveals consumers are still at high risk for identity theft, failing to practice even simple safeguards. The survey, fielded to coincide with National Protect Your Identity Week, shows the vast majority of U.S. adults (93 percent) recognize identity theft is a growing problem. Yet, 61 percent feel it would not be very difficult for a person to steal their identity and 67 percent are concerned that identity theft will affect them in the future.

The national study surveyed more than 2,000 consumers on their perceptions and activities related to identity theft. While 89 percent of online U.S. adults say they take steps to secure their digital information, more than half (55 percent) dont always check to see if a Website is secure before shopping online, and more than three out of five adults who have online accounts (63 percent) dont use a unique password for each of their online accounts.

"This survey clearly shows that, while people are more aware and concerned about identity theft, they are not doing what they should to stay protected, especially when it comes to online activities," said Ken Chaplin, senior vice president of marketing for Experians ProtectMyID. "Consumers clearly dont want to become victims, yet they continue to put themselves in danger."

The results also reveal that 92 percent of U.S. adults believe people should be more concerned about identity theft. In addition, 33 percent dont feel confident they are doing enough to protect their identities.

Additional key findings from the survey

Digital devices under-protected - U.S. adults own and use a variety of devices, but more than two in five of those who own a smartphone (43 percent) report they rarely or never use a password to unlock their smartphone. Additionally, 47 percent of adults who own a tablet indicate they rarely or never use a password to unlock their tablets.

Risky shopping - Ninety-one percent of U.S. adults shop online; however, many dont safeguard their credit card information. The survey shows that 57 percent of online shoppers dont always go to sites directly (by typing the name in their web browser), but instead click on links. This action increases the risk of going to a fraudulent site designed to capture the visitors personal information.

Social networking is too social - Among U.S. adults who have a social network profile such as Facebook and Twitter, slightly more than one in three (36 percent) manage their privacy settings on an ongoing basis. Many may be exposing themselves to fraud by allowing certain information to be public, such as educational background (60 percent), date of birth (44 percent), and email address (36 percent).

Real-world scenarios create simple dangers - Twenty-three percent of adults admit they set their purses, bags or jackets containing wallets under the table or behind them on a chair at a restaurant.

Social Security cards can put sensitive information into the wrong hands - Forty-six percent of adults write their Social Security number on job applications, medical forms, etc., and 29 percent say they carry their Social Security card (or a copy of it) in their wallet or purse.

diy tattoo choker with charm | How to keep teens alcohol and drug free this summer!

,

diy tattoo choker with charm

Summertime is here – and so is the season when many teens with time on their hands turn to experimenting with alcohol and drugs. Rather than throw up your hands and say there’s nothing you can do, take a minute to reflect on just how important and influential parents’ roles are to their children.
In fact, you can make a difference. It all starts with having proactive strategies in place to ensure your teens learn to live by the family’s rules and moral values, to appreciate that there are healthier ways to enjoy their summer months, and that responsibility is something that needs to be practiced.
What can you do? What are some of the most important areas to focus on? Here are some suggestions.
Be Involved
Instead of just going off to work and reminding teens to “be good” or “stick around the house” or warning them not to stay out too late, the best way to be in the know about what your children are doing is to be involved in their daily lives.
This doesn’t mean that you have to take time off from work to watch over them like a hawk, but it does mean that you engage in ongoing conversation about their likes, their friends, new activities and interests, what’s bothering them, any peer pressure, struggles with skills or learning ability, and what they want to get out of summer.
The more you interact with your teens, the more natural and comfortable this way of communicating will feel. The overarching impression is that you care about your kids and want to do all that you can to ensure that their teen years are filled with beneficial opportunities to learn and grow, and to build their core sense of values and increase personal responsibility.
Naturally, this will require more effort on your part than you may have thought, especially if you are only now beginning to realize that you can’t just leave kids to grow up on their own. In a vacuum, there are all sorts of dangers and risks for teens. Without firm and loving guidance and a moral compass, teens will likely find themselves on the wrong side of decision-making at a critical time.
While this may be easy to recommend, how do you implement a strategy to be involved in your teens’ lives? You could try the following:
  • Ask about their plans for the summer.
  • Discuss as a family things to do together on the weekend or make plans for a family summer vacation.
  • Learn the names and background of all your teen’s friends.
  • Communicate with the parents of your teen’s friends and make sure they know your wishes about not allowing alcohol and drug use.
  • Set clear rules, including rules about alcohol and drug use. Enforce the rules you set.
  • Know where your children are, what they are doing, whom they are with, and whom they are friends with.
  • Research activities together that your teen can participate in – hopefully, pertaining to his or her interests, but also encouraging them to discover new ones.
  • Have family meals together – no eating on the run or skipping meals. Use this time to discuss what everyone did today and what plans are for tomorrow and later on in the week.
  • Keep a family calendar with important dates and activities clearly listed.
  • Check in during the day with your teen using social media, instant message, texting or a quick phone call. Maybe use this time to let your teen know you’ve found out some information regarding an upcoming trip or event, or saw a great outfit or a guitar on sale or something else that will spark your teen’s interest and excitement.
  • Make time for one-on-one talks with your teen about anything that seems to be bothering him or her – or gently try to determine what may be wrong, if you notice a difference in attitude, dress, manner of speech, appearance or disappearance of certain friends, and so on.
  • Create a pledge between yourself and your children that promises they will not drink alcoholand use drugs.
Be a Good Role Model
It goes without saying – but it needs to be repeated – that parents should show teens good behaviorby their own actions. This means that parents have to know that their teenage son and daughter will be watching how they behave when others are around at a party where alcohol is served, at a restaurant when the parents order wine or cocktails and then get in the car and drive, even casual comments made about alcohol or drug use shown in movies and on television.
If you don’t want your teens to believe you have a laissez-faire attitude about drinking and drug use, you need to demonstrate that you have the good sense not to drink to excess, to drink and then drive, to drink regularly, to pop pills for every little reason, to combine pills and alcohol, to relax and unwind with a joint, a beer and a pill of some sort.
Beyond not drinking and using drugs – unless the medication is prescribed for you by a doctor and taken only by you for the purposes prescribed – you also need to convey that drinking and drug use does not solve problems. Instead, it creates and exacerbates problems.
Does this mean a radical change in your lifestyle? Maybe, but wouldn’t that be for the better? If you are a concerned parent, paying attention to rampant drug and alcohol use in society and knowing that teens are naturally curious and want to experiment, maybe this is a small price to pay to ensure that your children have an opportunity to grow up safe, secure and able to make sound decisions.
The old way of thinking was that parents could help ensure their teens learned about responsible drinking by making sure the teens drank at home under parental supervision. Today, however, research has shown that this is a false and dangerous strategy. It only shows teens that drinking and drug use is permissible, not that it is dangerous.
Keep in mind that teens do not have a fully developed brain until they are in their 20s. Their ability to make sound decisions isn’t where it needs to be yet and they can and do engage in crazy and destructive behavior when under the influence of alcohol and drugs. Just because they may be drinking in front of you at home doesn’t make this pattern of behavior any safer or better for them.
If you have any doubt about the validity of the recommendation to not allow teens to drink at home, remember any adult or caregiver in your own life that you saw engage in inappropriate behavior while drinking or using drugs. Maybe it was an uncle that consistently got sloshed and stumbled out the door to drive, often winding up in fender-benders, getting arrested for DUI or got involved in fights, trouble with the law, missed work and so on. Maybe it was a parent or older brother that you saw drive while drunk or high. How much did this behavior influence your own beliefs about alcohol and drugs?
You are the most important influence on your growing teens. Consistent study findings have shown that teens consider their parents to be highly or somewhat influential in their lives. In other words, they do tend to listen to what parents tell them. The more often family rules and values are reiterated and adhered to, the more of an influence they tend to have on teens.
Being a positive role model to teens means that parents:
  • Stay away from alcohol in high-risk situations. For example, do not drive a vehicle after drinking.
  • Get help if you believe you (the parent) have an alcohol-related problem.
  • Do not give alcohol or drugs to your children. Convey in a clear and concise manner that alcohol and drugs in your home are off limits to them and their friends at all times.
Be Aware of Risk Factors
Being a responsible and loving parent also means that you take the time to familiarize yourself with risk factors that may propel your teen toward alcohol and drug use, including:
  • Any significant social transition, such as moving from middle school to high school and getting a driver’s license
  • Any family history of alcoholism or drug use
  • Depression and other serious emotional problems
  • A history of social and emotional difficulties
  • Any contact with peers involved in troubling or suspicious activities
According to the latest Monitoring the Future Study from the University of Michigan, underage drinking continues to be a pervasive problem among American youth. The study of 10th and 12thgraders found that:
  • Nearly half (44 percent) of teens have consumed alcohol within the last year, while more than one in four teens (26 percent) reports having been drunk in the last year.
  • More than a quarter (26 percent) of teens said they had consumed alcohol within the last month, while more than one in seven (15 percent) reported being drunk in the last 30 days.
  • One in seven teens (14 percent) said they have had five or more drinks (binge drinking) in a row within the last 14 days.
  • More than three-quarters of 10th graders (78 percent) say it is fairly or very easy to get alcohol if they want some and more than half of 8th graders report the same.
Work With Schools and the Community
Consistency of the message that alcohol and drugs are off-limits needs to be communicated. To ensure this happens, parents should work with their children’s schools, with other members in the community and the local government. Here are the goals, as recommended by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in What You Can Do to Prevent Your Child from Drinking Alcohol:
  • Schools and the community support as well as reward young people’s decision not to drink [and use drugs].
  • Schools and the community identify and intervene early with children involved in underage drinking [and drug use].
  • Make sure that rules about underage drinking [and drug use] are in place at home, in school, and in your community.
  • Ensure that agreements of acceptable behavior are established, well-known, and consistently applied.
  • No alcohol [or drugs] permitted at parties and social events at home or elsewhere where children are present.
Be Consistent and Loving, but Firm
Bottom line: it just isn’t possible for parents to be with their teens 24/7 to protect them from harm. But parents can and should do the best they can to prepare their teens to be able to handle pressure and temptations to use alcohol and drugs. It is a big part of parental responsibility. In fact, parents have the best chance of helping shape their teens’ attitudes and beliefs about alcohol and drugs by virtue of their own behavior.
Above all, be loving parents. Keep the lines of communication open and honest. You and your children are in this together. You also want the best for their future. Give them the solid foundation they need to grow up with self-confidence, to be able to face life’s challenges and stresses and opportunities – without turning to alcohol and drugs.
Keep conversations going from their early childhood through adolescence and the teen years.  Be consistent, stay on message, be loving, but firm, and always be there for your children.
It’s the best thing parents can do to keep teens away from alcohol and drugs – this summer and anytime of the year.
