At a September 16 reunion at the Giddings State School, approximately 40 former Giddings youth returned to thank former and current staff who worked with them to turn their lives around and deliver a message of hope to current Giddings residents.  The reunion was an effort by Charleston White and the Hyped about HYPE (Helping Youth People Excel) Youth Outreach organization.

White was 14 when he and a group of teenagers were found responsible for the death of a man during a robbery.  He was committed to one of TJJD’s predecessor agency, the Texas Youth Commission, until his 21st birthday.  During that time, White admits that he was a difficult youth, often involved in disturbances and fights.  But he acknowledges that he was given a second chance during that time, and that the influences of the adults he interacted with daily while at Giddings was instrumental in his 180 degree turnaround.  White has since dedicated his activities to reaching out to other at-risk and incarcerated youth, encouraging them with his personal success story and the idea that it is never too late to turn your life around.

During the morning-long assembly in the Giddings gymnasium, these former youth, many of whom travelled from across Texas to be there, talked about their life-changing time at Giddings and how they were able to turn their lives around.  All speakers described familiar patterns in their lives leading up to their Giddings stay – neglected at home, a lack of empathy and respect, hanging out with the wrong crowds and an inability to connect with society.  Most acknowledged they were at Giddings for truly horrific crimes and were unable to fully grasp their true impact of their actions.  All cited their time at the Giddings campus and, more specifically the people who worked with them on a daily basis, as a pivotal period of their lives which enabled them to move forward, become mothers and fathers, and play productive roles in their communities.

The returnees also spoke directly to the staff and former staff that were assembled to hear them speak.  Nearly every speaker spoke of a specific staff member who stood with them during their incarceration, providing tough love, guidance and hope when those qualities were most needed.

Current Giddings youth also heard the HYPE message about the possibility of redemption and the importance of using their time in TJJD to develop the tools that will serve them when they return to their communities. 

“It’s not too late for you,” White said.  “No one is exempt from God’s love.”

Two special dogs, both graduates of our Pairing Achievement With Success (PAWS) program at our Ron Jackson facility in Brownwood, have received excellent care, training and attention from our youth trainers and are now ready for adoption.

Oreo, a very calm, laid-back Bassett Hound mix who loves attention and meeting new people, weighs about 35 lbs.  She is a younger dog between one and three years old.  She is a cuddler and loves children.  Oreo is a quick learner,  has passed all of the elements of the Canine Good Citizen test and loves to investigate her surroundings while on walks.  Her trainer says “she is a happy dog who brings a good spirit with her.”

Luna is a year-old Louisiana Catahoula Leopard dog (the State Dog of Louisiana) who weighs approximately 68 lbs. She is very smart but sometimes has a mind of her own. She really needs clear instructions and would do best with someone who knows about dogs and especially her kind of hound dog breed. She is very playful and friendly with people but very well-behaved. Other dogs are a big distraction. She can be left alone but when you leave the room, but needs something to entertain her until you return. She recently passed all the elements of the Canine Good Citizen test and is ready for her fur-ever home!

Youth from all TJJD facilities participated via video conference.

When we are faced with words like “Obviate,” “Efficacy,” and “Quixotic,” we will often rely on the spell-check option to ensure we don’t make a mistake.  But 20 TJJD students didn’t have spell-check to depend on.  They were part of the 2nd Annual Agency-Wide Spelling Bee sponsored by the TJJD Education Department.

Each campus, including the Phoenix unit, was given a list of more than 1,200 spelling words from the Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary that were broken down into four tiers to study for their chance at the finals.  Each campus was responsible for holding the preliminary rounds of the Spelling Bee to determine their top three spellers that would compete in the finals.

Excitement filled the room as all of the facilities faced off for the finals!  Each campus was represented by their best and the college classrooms were filled with support from the adults that cheered on the students as they competed round after round.

Our Top 2 “Spellers,” IC-S (1st place) and JC (2nd Place), are from the Phoenix Unit housed at the McLennan Residential Treatment Center.  EC from the Ron Jackson State Juvenile Correctional Complex took 3rd place.  Each of the contestants will receive a t-shirt with the runner-up Spelling Bee logo, and our first place winner will receive a t-shirt with the winning Spelling Bee logo.

Congratulations to all of our participants and a tremendous THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make this event such a success.
