A recent study done by Allergan, the company that markets Botox, surveyed patients who received Botox treatments and asked them to assess themselves for improvement in their appearance. Philadelphia, PA, June 19, 2013 – Recent studies linking bullying and depression, coupled with extensive media coverage of bullying-related suicide among young people, led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assemble an expert panel to focus on these issues. This panel synthesized the latest research about the complex relationship between youth involvement in bullying and suicide-related behaviors. Three themes emerged: 1) Bullying among youth is a significant public health problem, with widespread and often harmful results; 2) There is a strong association between bullying and suicide-related behaviors; and 3) Public health strategies can be applied to prevent bullying and suicide.
A special supplement of the Journal of Adolescent Health presents the panels findings, introduced by an insightful editorial by Marci Feldman Hertz, MS, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia, and Ingrid Donato and James Wright, MS, LCPC, Center for Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Rockville, Maryland.
Between 20 and 56 percent of young people are involved in bullying annually, as either a victim or perpetrator, or both. While bullying situations vary by type, age, and duration, middle school-aged children are more likely to be involved in bullying than those in high school. Verbal bullying occurs more frequently than physical or cyber-bullying and is more likely to happen over a longer time period. Further, lesbian and gay youth are more likely to be victimized than heterosexuals.
Poor mental and physical health among the victims and perpetrators of bullying, and those who experience both victimization and perpetration, investigators say, contribute to the problem. Further, involvement in bullying can have long-lasting, harmful effects, such as depression, anxiety, abdominal pain, and tension, months or even years later, as reported by two studies in this special supplement.
Researchers demonstrate a strong link between involvement in bullying and suicide. Dorothy Espelage and Melissa K. Holt, authors of "Suicidal Ideation and School Bullying Experiences After Controlling for Depression and Delinquency," show that the idea of suicide and attempts at suicide among middle school students were three-to-five times greater than among uninvolved students.
By applying public health strategies, researchers assert that bullying can be prevented, improving health and mental outcomes for many youth. Articles such as "Suicidal Thinking and Behavior Among Youth Involved in Verbal and Social Bullying: Risk and Protective Factors," by Iris Wagman Borowsky, Lindsay A. Taliaferro, and Barbara J. McMorris, reinforce the call for an integrated approach of multiple strategies to prevent suicide by focusing on shared risk and protective factors, including individual coping skills, family and school social support, and supportive school environments.
Notes the supplements guest editor, Marci Feldman Hertz, "Given the prevalence and impact of bullying, it is important to move forward while public health strategies are still being developed. We can begin by implementing and evaluating strategies that have demonstrated effectiveness at increasing protective factors and decreasing risk factors associated with both bullying and suicide." Education and health stakeholders, she adds, should consider broadening their focus beyond just providing services to those already involved in bullying or suicide-related behaviors. They should also implement strategies to prevent bullying and suicide behavior from occurring in the first place.

Children are suffering "sadistic levels" of sexual abuse by gangs, but services designed to protect them are still woefully inadequate, a new study has found.
The research for the Childrens Commissioner said victims of gang sexual abuse could be as young as 11 years old and the offenders as young as 12 years old.
The children also have younger siblings who are on the fringes of being at risk.
Deputy Childrens Commissioner, Sue Berelowitz, told Sky News: "I have worked with many children who have been victims of sexual violence, but I have never before encountered the levels of sadism and cruelty that I have during this inquiry.
"The sheer degree of depravity that has been enacted on children, sometimes by other children, has been truly shocking."
The report also found that only 6% of Local Safeguarding Children Boards (LSCBs) are fully complying with key parts of Government guidance on tackling sexual exploitation.
"Whilst 98% of LSCBs told the inquiry that Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is a strategic priority, almost half were unable to tell us how many victims had been identified during 2012 in their local area," it said.
"During site visits we also continued to hear references to children putting themselves at risk, rather than the perpetrators being the risk to children."
The report went on: "Too many people who should be protecting children are in denial about the realities of CSE and therefore do not believe what children may tell them. One young person told us They made me feel like it was my fault."

In a long list of failings, the report says agencies are "failing to engage" with children, that there is a "lack of leadership" and "limited or no strategic planning".
It also emerged that one chair of a Childrens Safeguarding Board did not even know there was a set of Government guidelines on the issue.
Ms Berelowitz, told Sky News the panel had been shocked by the lack of action being taken.
"There is no doubt that children are still falling through the net because of some serious failings," she said.
"It was of great concern to us to identify that of the top 15 requirements that Local Safeguarding Board must comply with to protect children, only 6% are doing what they should be doing.
"So the vast majority of them have a long way to go before they are doing what they should be doing in law to protect children."
A two-year study by the University of Bedfordshire, whichwas released alongside the report, said that rape was used by gang members as "a form of weaponry".
Report author Jenny Pearce told Sky News: "Thirty four per cent said multiple rape was commonplace among gangs.
"Initiation to a gang might be through raping a girl. A young man might have his girlfriend raped as a form of punishment. Someone might be raped for failing to perform a task."
She added: "Only one in 12 said they would report a rape, and of those most would only tell peers.
"They wont go to the police. Thats something we need to address."
The report authors spoke to 188 young people living in gang-affected areas and found that gang sexual violence was not confined to inner cities, or even deprived areas, but was a countrywide problem.
To coincide with these two reports, London Metropolitan University has studied young peoples attitudes to rape and sexual consent.
Young people were given rape scenarios and asked whether they felt consent had been given.
Dr Maddy Coy, who conducted the study, said: "There is a sense that young womens actions are always under scrutiny.
"If they have accepted a drink, or worn a top that flatters their breasts, that is seen as an invitation to have sex and they are blamed for what happens next.
"The focus is always on those giving consent, but not enough focus on getting consent. Young people are not aware of what getting consent looks like."
Dr Coy added that only a "minority of young people we spoke to felt that consent should be negotiated".
The Childrens Commission is now calling for the Department of Education to review the guidance on child sexual exploitation and to ensure that local services are complying with what has already been set out.
It suggests problem-profiling of potential victims, offenders and gangs needs to take place - along with a greater emphasis on relationship and sex education by trained professionals for children and young people.

Beck said parents had the choice of having an open and honest discussion with their child about drugs, giving them the armor to combat the temptation of substance abuse or there was a good chance their child would eventually be in the system.
“There are so many opportunities for a child to go the wrong way, you need to give them the information to make the right choice,” said the mayor.
Angelo Valente, executive director of PDFNJ, said the “15-Minute Child Break” stressed the importance of a parent or caregiver’s role on substance abuse prevention.
“This presentation is an opportunity for parents and caregivers to come out and find out the role they play and the power they have in preventing their children from abusing drugs and alcohol,” said Valente.
The program will also explain how to notice the signs of drug use, current terminology and trends of use. Participants receive age specific information and communication skills concerning substance abuse.
