So you are your Organizations Social Media Manager? So have you thought through how you will address content posted to one of your Social Media Platforms? Do you have criteria? Is there a procedure or practice in place to address issues such as sales, promotions, solicitations or inappropriate content? How do you make that policy available to your follows, fans, and posters to you platforms? These are all questions that all need to be addressed in order to have a well rounded and safe approach to your organizations Social Media Platforms.

Any Organization utilizing Social Media should have clear guidelines laid out and available to the public. These guidelines would address issues that followers, likers, or users to your Social Media Platforms would need to abide by. They provide standards of conduct, which in the event an issues were to arise for specific types of behavior you can address them.

You first should define what your Organizations Social Media Policy defines, what is acceptable, what is not. A Social Media Manager should plan to routinely post a link to their Social Media Policy. These posts should be across all your Social Media Platforms.

What your Social Media policy should have.

1. It should identify your Organization, as well as your current and active Social Media Platforms.
2. It should define who to contact regarding your Social Media Platforms. Examples would include your Public Relations/Public Information Officer, Social Media Manager or Freedom of Information Officer.  
3. The Social Media Policy should include key policy issues, Terms of Use, Prohibited Content and Disclaimer. 
4. A small section should also be about links and validity of links. However, it is inherint on the Social Media Manager to check the link to determine if the connected content is not a link 

Terms of Use (TOU)

Terms of Use are those areas which define purpose, platform, contact and type of information to be disseminated.

• This should include identifying the the purpose of the of your Social Media Platforms. For Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, Local Governments, and Non Governmental Organizations the primary function will be as a communication too. 
• The TOU may include terms such as raising awareness and information for the general public in and around the community you serve. 
• TOU should indicate what types of information you plan on putting out on your Social Media Platforms. These might include public safety messages, news releases, photos, videos, Amber Alerts, road closures, power outages and other emergency announcements. 
• TOU should also indicate that all of the organizations Social Media Platforms shall comply with all applicable organization policies and procedures. 

Prohibited Content:

Prohibited Content defines that all posts are monitored and subject to removal from the site when they violate the defined prohibited content.  Prohibited content can include but is not limited to:

• Profane language or content
• Content that promotes, fosters, or perpetuates discrimination on the basis of race, religion, gender, marital status, familial status, national origin, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, source of income, or other protected status under applicable law
• Inappropriate sexual content or links to inappropriate sexual content
• Solicitations of commerce
• Conduct or encouragement of illegal activity
• Private and confidential information
• Information that may tend to compromise the safety and security of the public or public systems
• Content that violates a legal ownership interest of any other party

A new study in the Journal Preventive Medicine shows teens who get less than six hours of sleep a night could be at greater risk for engaging in dangerous behavior.

Researchers at Florida International University looked at the sleep durations of more than 15,000 high-schoolers as part of the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

They found the teens who averaged less than six hours a sleep were more likely to use alcohol, participate in risky sexual behaviors, get in fights and are obese.

Compared with teens who averaged eight or more hours a sleep a night, teens who clocked five hours of sleep were more likely to engage in every single one of the 12 risky behaviors measured.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends teens get eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep a night.

We are no longer strangers to the effects of sugary treats and drinks on our waistlines and health, but scientists have now discovered that high sugar diets are causing our skin to rapidly age as well.


As reported in the UK newspaper The Telegraph, Dr David Gunn and his team discovered that the higher a persons blood sugar, the older their perceived age. Their study, conducted on over 600 50 to 70 year olds, found that each 1 mmol/litre increase in blood glucose levels increases perceived facial age by 5 months, and on average, a diabetic looked up to 2 years older than a person of similar age and lifestyle but with low blood sugar levels.

So how exactly does the sweet stuff make you look older? The answer is in a process called glycation. The sugar in your blood stream binds to proteins in your skin such as collagen and elastin, producing molecules that are known as advanced glycation end-products, or AGEs for short. AGEs cause collagen to become brittle and dry, causing wrinkling and sagging.
The effects are most pronounced as the skin ages, causing collagen and elastin production to naturally decrease after the age of 35.  

Dermatologists such as Fredric Brandt, MD, the creator of the highly successful Dr. Brandt range of skincare products, and Dr Aamer Khan, medical director of the famous London Harley Street Skin Clinic agree that a proper anti-aging regime should include the avoidance of high glucose foods for true effectiveness. Dr Khan was quoted in a recent interview, saying there was little point in application of expensive skin creams as a diet high in sugar would sabotage the growth of strong, healthy skin cells.  

Unfortunately, avoiding high glucose intake is not as easy as it sounds. Sugary substances and high-sugar foods such as candy and chocolate, and sugary soft drinks and juices are not the only foods that need to be avoided. High glycaemic index (GI) foods such as cakes, biscuits and white bread are also very easily converted by the body into simple sugars, and most processed foods including sauces and salty snacks often have sugar listed in their ingredients. Switch to low GI foods such as brown rice, multi-grain bread and non-wheat grains such as quinoa instead. The aim should be to ensure sugary substances makes up less than 10 percent of the total dietary intake. Regular consumption of green tea is also known to boost collagen formation while interfering with the glycation process.

The good news is that those who have tried it have discovered benefits such as smoother, younger-looking skin, within the first few days of changing their dietary habits. Some claim that this simple change has made them look up to 20 years younger, and with the added health benefits of a low sugar diet for the heart and body, you might even feel a lot younger too.

My youngest son Alex is a Second Degree Blackbelt and a while back he learned the value of just good enough and why its should not be acceptable when teaching children to have a drive to be better. So Alex wanted to experience Karate Tournaments outside his own school. He competed in a tournament and placed third in sparring earning a right to compete in a National qualifying tournament in Detroit.

So off we go to Detroit. Alex has always been a perfectionist. He strives to be the very best he can and adheres to rules to a fault. So we arrive for this tournament and the first thing we experienced was the sheer level of skill and expertise we were up against. We spent eight very tough hours learning that although we were unmatched we had a lot of work to do. Alex took it like a true sportsman. He didnt place last, he fell somewhere in the middle of the pack. But what Alex did after each event, was what said it all to me. He shook the hands of each and every competitor. When he came off of the floor and came over to me his first words to me, "They were amazing!", "I have a lot of work to do."  I found myself almost saying, "You did great." But instead I caught myself and said, "Did you try your best?" Alex said, "Yes, but I need alot of work!"

So here I am thinking that Alex will probably needs some coaching in the car on the way back home, but honestly, I didnt need to do any of that. He talked about the tournament all the way home, how he was going to make changes to his form, and his tactics in sparring.  To this day, more than a year later he talks about that tournament like he was there yesterday. It was one of those learning experiences for both myself and Alex, something that caught me by surprise. He didnt get a trophy, he didnt win, he should have been completely dejected, but instead he was invigorated, inspired and tenacious. 

To re-iterate the experience of everyone is "good enough", I am going to us my son Alex again. He competes in two Karate tournaments each year which is within his particular discipline and he competes against other Karate schools within the over Karate Group. We pay a fair amount of money for the registration, which is as expected, but on the signs for the tournament, it says all finalist will receive a trophy. In reality, everyone who doesnt place first, second and third, you are a finalist.Alex did very well at this tournament, he placed in four of the five events he competed in. Taking a first place in the Weapons form division, which was the most important to him, First in Regular Form Division, Third in Board Breaks, and Second in Sparring. The last event, Sword Sparring he was a finalist. Typically divisions were usually between eight to twelve students. When we went to get his trophy they asked him if he wanted a finalist trophy. His comment, was "if I do not place, why would I want to be reminded I lost."  He also said, "Dad winning isnt everything, but if I dont try to win, how will I ever win." How did my 12 year old son gain so much wisdom?  

After working with hundreds of youth in my career and raising three great kids, my son, came to his own realizations that "just showing up" doesnt entitle you to a trophy, that to feel good about yourself you need to feel good from within, be confident in your skills and believe in your heart that you tried you absolute hardest to do whatever it was you were doing. To paraphrase "Winning isnt everything." But not understanding that you must strive to win, you must experience loss, to value the win and to relish in it as well.
