The drug of choice used most frequently by American teenagers is alcohol. It is consumed more frequently than all other illicit drugs combined, and is the drug most likely to be associated with injury or death. April is Alcohol Awareness Month and a good time to bring awareness to this growing problem.

Too many teens, and their parents, view drinking as almost a “rite of passage” and harmless as long as the teen doesn’t drink and drive. That is an attitude that needs to change. Alcohol is a powerful, mind-altering drug that affects the brain and all of the developing organs. Alcohol is involved in teen auto crashes, sexually transmitted diseases, homicides, and suicides.

We’re seeing younger and younger children using alcohol. A child who starts drinking before the age

of 15 is four times as likely to develop alcoholism in adulthood as children who wait to consume alcohol until the legal age of 21. Some children in elementary or middle school are already using alcohol, so parents need to have a series of discussions with their child tailored to their child’s developmental stage. The younger a child is when they begin using alcohol, the more likely it is to lead to violence, other drug usage and the potential for alcoholism later.

Binge drinking is a big concern for many parents. Alcohol poisoning is a very real threat that can be fatal if someone consumes large enough quantities rapidly. Contrary to popular belief, binge drinking typically starts in high school rather than on college campuses. But, parents can make a huge difference. The number one reason cited by teens that choose not to drink is their parents. When parents talk to teens about drinking, the teens really do listen.

College students spend more on alcohol than they do on soft drinks, milk, juice, coffee and books combine. Investigate the college your child will attend and find out the local laws and campus alcohol policies. Consider visiting the campus on a Friday or Saturday night to observe the behavior of the students. Stay involved with your child and be aware of changes in grades, friends, or attitudes toward classes and studying. Even college students who choose not to drink may face challenges on campuses where drinking is heavy because of risks ranging from annoyances such as vandalism to the threat of increased violence.

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence shared the following statistics:

• There are more deaths and disabilities each year in the U.S. from substance abuse than from any other cause.
• About 18 million Americans have alcohol problems; only 5-6 million Americans have drug problems.
• Fetal alcohol syndrome is the leading cause of mental retardation.
• Heavy drinking contributes to the top three causes of death: heart disease, cancer and stroke.
• Drinking contributes significantly to other health problems.

In addition, alcohol plays a role in:

• One quarter of all emergency room admissions.
• One third of all suicides.
• More than half of all homicides.
• More than half of all incidents of domestic abuse.
• Almost half of all traffic fatalities.

Philadelphia, PA, June 19, 2013 – Recent studies linking bullying and depression, coupled with extensive media coverage of bullying-related suicide among young people, led the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to assemble an expert panel to focus on these issues. This panel synthesized the latest research about the complex relationship between youth involvement in bullying and suicide-related behaviors. Three themes emerged: 1) Bullying among youth is a significant public health problem, with widespread and often harmful results; 2) There is a strong association between bullying and suicide-related behaviors; and 3) Public health strategies can be applied to prevent bullying and suicide.


A special supplement of the Journal of Adolescent Health presents the panels findings, introduced by an insightful editorial by Marci Feldman Hertz, MS, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, Georgia, and Ingrid Donato and James Wright, MS, LCPC, Center for Mental Health Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Rockville, Maryland.

Between 20 and 56 percent of young people are involved in bullying annually, as either a victim or perpetrator, or both. While bullying situations vary by type, age, and duration, middle school-aged children are more likely to be involved in bullying than those in high school. Verbal bullying occurs more frequently than physical or cyber-bullying and is more likely to happen over a longer time period. Further, lesbian and gay youth are more likely to be victimized than heterosexuals.

Poor mental and physical health among the victims and perpetrators of bullying, and those who experience both victimization and perpetration, investigators say, contribute to the problem. Further, involvement in bullying can have long-lasting, harmful effects, such as depression, anxiety, abdominal pain, and tension, months or even years later, as reported by two studies in this special supplement.

Researchers demonstrate a strong link between involvement in bullying and suicide. Dorothy Espelage and Melissa K. Holt, authors of "Suicidal Ideation and School Bullying Experiences After Controlling for Depression and Delinquency," show that the idea of suicide and attempts at suicide among middle school students were three-to-five times greater than among uninvolved students.

By applying public health strategies, researchers assert that bullying can be prevented, improving health and mental outcomes for many youth. Articles such as "Suicidal Thinking and Behavior Among Youth Involved in Verbal and Social Bullying: Risk and Protective Factors," by Iris Wagman Borowsky, Lindsay A. Taliaferro, and Barbara J. McMorris, reinforce the call for an integrated approach of multiple strategies to prevent suicide by focusing on shared risk and protective factors, including individual coping skills, family and school social support, and supportive school environments.

Notes the supplements guest editor, Marci Feldman Hertz, "Given the prevalence and impact of bullying, it is important to move forward while public health strategies are still being developed. We can begin by implementing and evaluating strategies that have demonstrated effectiveness at increasing protective factors and decreasing risk factors associated with both bullying and suicide." Education and health stakeholders, she adds, should consider broadening their focus beyond just providing services to those already involved in bullying or suicide-related behaviors. They should also implement strategies to prevent bullying and suicide behavior from occurring in the first place.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said his agency was stepping up efforts to stem sharp increases in deadly heroin overdoses, trafficking in the drug and abuse of prescription narcotics at the root of what he called an "urgent public health crisis."

As part of that campaign, Holder reiterated the Obama administrations call for more law enforcement

agencies to train and equip personnel with an overdose-reversal medication called naloxone.

The director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy issued a similar plea to police and fire departments last month.

Holder said 17 states and the District of Columbia have amended their laws to increase access to naloxone, a blocking agent that can reverse the effects of an overdose and help restore breathing.

He said emergency use of naloxone had resulted in more than 10,000 overdose reversals since 2001.

Still, fatal heroin overdoses have increased 45 percent from 2006 to 2010, with 3,038 such deaths reported that year, and the numbers are believed to still be on the rise, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The rising level of heroin use in recent years stems from a corresponding epidemic in the abuse of prescription opiate-based painkillers, such as oxycodone, DEA officials say. Deaths from overdoses of such drugs numbered more than 16,600 in 2010.

Many individuals who start out abusing oxycodone turn eventually to heroin as they build up a tolerance to the pain pills and find that they can buy heroin far more cheaply than prescription medications on the black market, experts say.

Meanwhile, trafficking in heroin, the bulk of it smuggled into the United States from Mexico, has climbed in conjunction with increasing demand.

"When confronting the problem of substance abuse, it makes sense to focus attention on the most dangerous types of drugs. And right now, few substances are more lethal than prescription opiates and heroin," Holder said in a video message posted on Monday on the Justice Departments website.

Holder said the DEA was leading a federal enforcement crackdown, and cited a 320 percent increase in the amount of heroin seized by U.S. authorities along the U.S.-Mexico border between 2008 and 2013.

The federal government also is enlisting the help of physicians, teachers, police and community leaders to boost support for substance abuse education, prevention and treatment, Holder said.

He said the DEA was focusing such efforts in regions experiencing a particularly high incidence of heroin abuse, such as in northern Ohio, where numbers of heroin-related deaths had recently jumped four-fold.

National attention on heroin abuse was riveted by the case of acclaimed actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who was found dead from an accidental drug overdose in his Manhattan apartment last month, a needle still in his arm.

An autopsy determined the performer succumbed to acute intoxication from a mixture of heroin, cocaine and other drugs in his system.
