ST. GEORGE — A counselor at a LaVerkin facility for troubled youth was sentenced to 120 days in jail Tuesday for showing personal videos of sexual behavior to boys being housed at the institution.

Donald M. Brown Jr., 48, pleaded guilty in August to five felony counts of offering harmful material to a minor as part of an agreement that dismissed five other charges, but acknowledged in the 5th District Court

hearing that he had written a letter to the court in which he claimed the charges were racially motivated.

“I was a little frustrated because some of (the accusations are) true and some of it is not,” Brown, an African-American, told Judge Eric Ludlow. “The statement I wrote I did out of frustration. I apologize and I’d just like to move on.”

Brown said he discussed the videos with the youth, contradicting an investigator’s statement that Brown admitted the youths had seen pornography on his phone “several times, but every time was an accident” and that “a LOT of accidents” took place.

Deputy County Attorney Zachary Weiland expressed concern that Brown was not taking responsibility for his actions, and Ludlow added that he was troubled by Brown’s statements.

“I don’t think you’ve come clean, quite frankly,” the judge said.

Under questioning about whether Brown was disputing his guilty pleas, and after further discussion with defense attorney Ryan Stout, Brown added, “I admit to it and I apologize.”

Brown could have faced up to five years in prison for each charge, but pre-sentencing investigators recommended the 120-day sentence based in part on Brown’s lack of prior criminal history and compliance with court instructions.

“He … grew up on the rough side of Chicago,” Stout said, asking Ludlow to keep Brown out of jail so he could keep his job. “He’s a man that’s proud of his lack of criminal history. He’s got a lot of friends walking around with convictions. … Mr. Brown’s done a fantastic job of staying out of trouble.”

Stout said Brown has found a job since being fired from the Youth Foundation Success Academy, a youth facility that is an outgrowth of the Cross Creek Programs and Horizon Academy.

Stout asked that any sentence allow him to continue working at his new job

Brown’s wife, who acknowledged being part of the threesome shown in the videos, was also employed at the youth facility, but Stout said Brown is now the family’s sole provider.Ludlow agreed with the recommended four-month jail sentence, however, granting Brown credit for 17 days served. Ludlow also denied Stout’s request for Brown to turn himself in by the weekend and instead ordered Brown taken into custody immediately.

Ludlow said he was not inclined to be lenient because multiple victims were involved and the victims were “particularly vulnerable,” noting Brown’s position of authority over them.

Behavior like this should not be tolerated.

A new study in the Journal Preventive Medicine shows teens who get less than six hours of sleep a night could be at greater risk for engaging in dangerous behavior.

Researchers at Florida International University looked at the sleep durations of more than 15,000 high-schoolers as part of the 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey.

They found the teens who averaged less than six hours a sleep were more likely to use alcohol, participate in risky sexual behaviors, get in fights and are obese.

Compared with teens who averaged eight or more hours a sleep a night, teens who clocked five hours of sleep were more likely to engage in every single one of the 12 risky behaviors measured.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends teens get eight and a half to nine and a half hours of sleep a night.

A study conducted at the University of Virginia Curry School of Education identified key factors in positive youth development in ethnic or Hispanic teen males.

Positive youth development and positive ethnic identity are two important psychological factors for Hispanic boys living in poverty. According to new research from the University of Virginia, negative stereotypes that can cause depression or force youth into criminal activities can be combated with building a positive sense of self and sense of connection to others.

Assistant Professor Joanna Williams at the University of Virginia’s Curry School of Education, headed up a research team to see how the theory of positive youth development impacted Hispanic and non-Hispanic black young males living in poverty.

The researchers indicate in their report these two demographics often experience high rates of depression and criminalization due to a general acceptance they are supposed to fill certain

stereotypical roles.

As opposed to spotlighting problem behaviors among Hispanic boys, Williams and her team focused on providing positive youth development and positive ethnic identity for urban males of color. This included building up the youths’ strengths while allowing them to interact with other positive youths in social situations.

Williams explained in a University press release non-Hispanic black and Hispanic urban male youth in low-income families have several factors that can heighten their vulnerability to stress, and these stressors can increase the odds of engaging in anti-social behavior as a means of coping. With factors like strong, supportive school and communities, caring adults, pro-social peers and cultural connections, however, these young men can increase the likelihood of positive and healthy development, she said.

The results of the study found urban males of color positive youth development and cultural connections were linked to lower levels of depressive symptoms and an increased likelihood to engage in positive social behaviors such as joining school activities.

“We are thrilled to see increasing national attention to research that promotes strengths-based messages about black boys and other boys of color,” said Williams. “This body of work addresses an ongoing, critical need to counter pervasive, negative stereotypes that typically criminalize these youth. In our study, the personal strengths of black and Latino male teens living in urban poverty were associated with engagement in pro-social activities and avoidance of externalizing and criminal behaviors. As a broader research goal, we’re also working on integrating findings across fields that are often viewed separately, with the recognition that, for example, theories of positive youth development can inform our understanding of theories of ethnic identity development, and vice versa. Ultimately, this can only strengthen our understanding of how to foster positive outcomes for all youth.”

The research team adds more research should be done to look at how cultural connections influence depression, as the study’s data suggests this may prove to be an important factor in decreasing negative mental health symptoms in minorities. Cultural assets are important, stated Williams, because minority individuals are often exposed to racial or ethnic discrimination, a stressor that can foster poor mental health outcomes.
