Prescription drug abuse and misuse is killing women in record-breaking numbers, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In a study conducted from 1999 to 2010, the CDC said that almost 48,000 American women died of prescription painkiller overdoses- 6,600 of that number- or 18 women a day- died in 2010. 

“Our concern is that daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers are dying at overdose rates never seen before,” said Gail Hayes, a senior CDC Injury Center representative. “Women do so much to take care of their families and keep them healthy- but they also need to keep themselves healthy.”

According to Hayes, part of the issue arises from the fact that women are more likely than men to be prescribed painkillers by physicians—and they are being told to take these medicines at higher doses for longer periods of time.

Hayes also told the AFRO that every doctor needs to actively screen and monitor patients for possible

prescription painkiller abuse or misuse, and that “states can help by increasing access [to] substance abuse programs.”

Conversing in detail about medications already prescribed, medical history, and pregnancy plans is a must, too.

“Physicians need to talk with their patients about the risks and the benefits of taking prescription pain killers,” she said. “especially if they have a patient that is pregnant or thinking about having children.”

Hayes added that another issue coming into play is the fact that Americans hold on to drugs they no longer need for possible later use or, even worse, for sharing with family or friends.

According to Maryland Poison Control, 74 percent of calls about overdoses and poisonings in 2011 were drug related. Of that figure, cardiovascular prescriptions accounted for 5.2 percent of poisonings or overdoses, with antidepressants making up 5.9 percent. Antipsychotics, hypnotics, and sedatives made up 10.4 percent of all the calls in Maryland for that same year.

                The journey from free life into prison is one of great culture shock; the transition back out is equally disorienting.  To many ex-convicts, it is too much to handle, particularly when the reality sets in of just how difficult it can be to get a foothold back in society. 

                Hurdles abound:

                                (1) one cannot work without a Social Security card that takes two weeks to obtain. 

                                (2) From there, one must get either a State ID or Driver’s License in order to cash checks or open a bank account; at least two more weeks. 

                                (3) Then, to sign up for government assistance and medical care, you have to get a copy of your birth certificate; minimum of  $17.75 and at least two more weeks.

So that’s six weeks a person would have to somehow support themselves on the $100 that DOC garnishes from your account while you are inside. 

Not an easy proposition…

Thankfully my own experience has been far wide of the norm.  My family has been exceptionally supportive, and I was hired into a volunteer position three days after release.  So I personally am doing fine, but for the average fellow who has to stay in a halfway house and work under the table, the frustration could (and has) easily drive them back into crime just to get some money for daily needs. 

So as to why I am currently scrubbing toilets at the local church - it’s my job, and I enjoy it. J

Cellulite might as well be a foul word, because nobody wants anything to do with it. There are numerous myths, procedures and plans for how to get rid of it. Before you get too worked up and take drastic measures, read below to find out what cellulite really is and what safe choices there are to aid in its disappearance.

What is cellulite?

Cellulite is the trapping of swollen fat cells between fibrous bands of tissue. As these pockets become denser, sometimes lumps or dimples can be seen on the surface of the skin. Cellulite is not a disease, illness or condition. It is simply the way your body’s fat cells have deposited between connective tissue. People of all shapes and sizes can have cellulite.

What causes cellulite?

Some situations that may cause cellulite include poor diet, fad dieting, slow metabolism, lack of physical activity, hormone changes, dehydration, total body fat and thickness or color of the skin.  Keep in mind that most of these also lead to basic weight gain. Thickness and color of skin do not factor in to weight gain, but they do influence the appearance of cellulite. The lighter and thinner your skin is, the more likely you are to see cellulite on the surface of your skin.

Can cellulite be prevented or treated?

While cellulite can be treated, there is no quick fix or guaranteed method for getting rid of it. Although it is not harmful, cellulite isn’t exactly pleasing to the eye. Many people want to get rid of it once it shows up. People have used a variety of methods to reduce the existence and appearance of cellulite. The below methods vary in effectiveness, but all generally have some impact on cellulite.

1. Liposuction – Probably the most well-known “quick fix” for cellulite, this procedure has been quoted in songs and popular culture for the past decade. A surgery that removes fat cells from the body by essentially vacuuming them out, liposuction is not a guaranteed solution for cellulite. In fact, the erratic vacuuming of the fat cells may actually cause more defined dimples afterward. This is because liposuction may not remove all fat cells.
2. Mesotherapy – Not as well-known as liposuction, mesotherapy is the regimented injection of substances such as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and amino acids into the tissue just beneath the skin. It can result in a slight improvement to the appearance of cellulite, but it has potential risks that include swelling, infection and irregular contours.
3. Massage and spa treatments – Endermologie is a treatment that involves kneading the skin with a suction device to stimulate collagen production by increasing circulation to the treated area. Laser treatments are becoming more frequent in spas as well. FDA-approved laser treatments claim to sever the connective tissues that press the fat cells together, creating the bulging. They also claim to melt the fat, creating a smoother appearance. These are relatively new procedures, so there aren’t many stories, positive or negative, to support their validity. These treatments do not remove the fat cells that cause cellulite, so any associated benefits are only temporary.
4. Cellulite Creams – These creams claim to dissolve fat and smooth the skin, but there is no scientific evidence to support these claims. Many of the creams contain aminophylline, which is an agent to that can cause the blood vessels to narrow and help flush water from the skin. This effect can be dangerous to people with existing circulatory problems and may cause allergic reactions in others.

Don’t forget about your diet!

Because cellulite is the accumulation of fat cells, your best chance of changing its appearance lies in shrinking those fat cells. This can be done through a lifestyle change focused on healthier eating and increased physical exercise. Remember that poor diet, fad dieting and lack of physical activity can all cause cellulite.

Keep in mind:

• Diets low in sugar and salt help prevent water retention and the plumping of the fat cells within the fibrous bands that create the cellulite dimples. Take note of the sodium and sugar content in the foods you eat. Try to stay below 6 teaspoons of sugar and 2000 mg of sodium each day.
• Diets high in protein promote lean muscle mass. Protein rich foods include meat, beans, fish, eggs, nuts and seeds.
• Exercise helps to use utilize fat stores to burn energy and build muscle mass. Focus on strength exercises that tone the areas where cellulite appears. Also, cardio workouts help to utilize those fat stores and keep your metabolism elevated even after you are finished working out. 

As the fat cells shrink in size and increased muscle mass replaces body fat, you should experience a reduction in the appearance of cellulite.

Although cellulite is not pleasant to the eye, you should know that it is not something to rush to your doctor about. Before you resort to extreme solutions, try altering your daily diet and exercise programs for a healthy low-risk fix. I am very pleased and proud to introduce our “new and improved” Texas Juvenile Justice Today newsletter through this column. The former “Executive Director’s Report” focused exclusively on TJJD state operations. A number of people asked over the past few months whether the agency’s newsletter could become more reflective and more representative of who we are today – one agency administering one system. So, we have done away with the Executive Director’s Report format in favor of this Texas Juvenile Justice Today.  This is our first edition.

 

Through this newsletter, we hope to include stories, articles and features that will reflect a wide array of different programs, special events, staff profiles both from state operations and probation departments, community participation in programs, and operations both at the state and local levels.  Stories and profiles of the wonderful people who do this work that you may not hear about otherwise.   It’s an unfortunate fact of life that most of what we may hear about  going on “somewhere else” in our state is of a negative nature.  And sometimes it is.  But the fact is that the achievements, the creativity, the dedication and commitment reflected through the work of our collective employees doesn’t typically get the same level of attention.  So this is an effort, one effort, to communicate among ourselves about some of the interesting and noteworthy activities going on in state programs and in local probation departments around the state.

If you Googled for themed cafes in Taipei, you would find a list and one of them would be the Modern Toilet Cafe. Wanting to pass some time during my recent solo trip to Taipei, I arranged for lunch with my Mom at the Modern Toilet Cafe. Come lets take a look at what the cafe had in store for us. ; )

On the ground floor youd find a staircase leading to the dining area on the second floor.

At the entrance, you already could see decors of toilet bowls & poop. Lol. 

Toilet, anyone? : D

Arriving on the second floor was a crowd of customers dining on toilet bowls.
Looks pretty funny huh.

And this... Was my toilet bowl for that afternoon. Haha.

Seated down, we were greeted with a basin of poop - the decor under the dining table.
Fancy the view during mealtime?

Flipping through the menu, I found the prices rather reasonable. Main courses ranged from NT$200-$400, and each main course came with tea and an ice-cream. The variety was fairly wide too.

Payment was made at the cashier during order. Souvenirs can be purchased while waiting. 

Theres a corner with more novelty items for sale.

Gift items were funny-looking & affordable too.

I ordered a Classic Toilet Meal - Chicken Curry with rice. I ordered this thinking it was Japanese-style curry, ended up it tasted more like local Singapore curry. Curry gravy was thick and tasteful, and generous with the chicken chunks. Its not bad if you are a curry lover. The sides that came with the rice was a clear mushroom soup that tasted bland, and a small saucer of shell-like appetizer which I did not try cuz I wasnt supposed to take seafood. In the top right corner you see two glasses of beverages. The simple looking one was the complimentary red tea that came with the main course, and the blue urinal drink was Bubble Milk Tea which I topped up an additional NT$50 for. The Bubble Milk Tea was not fantastic, would rather buy from bubble tea stores else where. IMO the complimentary red tea actually tasted better than the Bubble Milk Tea. Topped up only for the novelty of the cup for photo-taking actually.

Picture looks good eh? Making myself feel hungry already. : P

Mom ordered a Seafood Pesto Cream Sauce Spaghetti. She said it tasted yummy though I personally felt nothing about it. Maybe it was because I tried this after taking a bite of my Curry Chicken and made this taste less. I must say it looked pretty decent though.

The complimentary Chocolate Ice Cream tasted a little like Milo Ice Cream.
Cute and quite tasty. Poop ice-cream anyone? : D

Total of approx. NT$750 was spent for 2 set meals, which was equivalent to SGD$33 - price was quite affordable I would say. Of course it was more expensive than local street foods, but for this price to dine for the experience while travelling, not that bad after all lah.
