If you ever watched Sex and the City, you may remember the episode in which Samantha got a chemical peel right before a big event. It was a funny storyline in which she tried to cover up her face to keep people from seeing the redness caused by the peel.

Well…not all chemical peels are like that! It is important to plan some downtime depending on the one you get, but here’s The Skinny on a few chemical peels and the downtime associated with each.

Stimulator Peel

About: A light combination of acids to improve rough skin texture, lighten age spots and hyperpigmentation and minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

Downtime: None

Recommendation: A series of three to four peels done every two weeks

Sensitive Skin Solution Peel

About: A light peel designed for sensitive skin that exfoliates and decongests pores while hydrating the skin

Downtime: None

Recommendation: A safe, skin brightening treatment before an event or wedding that is best performed with a dermaplaning treatment

Gel Peel

About: Gel peels encourage cell renewal and improve collagen synthesis and skin elasticity. Combined, glycolic and lactic acids work synergistically to exfoliate the skin while reducing irritation and dryness.
Downtime: None

Recommendation: Best for photo-damaged skin, rough texture, dry skin and aging skin

Micropeel

About: A 30 percent glycolic acid chemical peel that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, laxity, dullness and acne

Downtime: Minimal

Recommendation: At least five peels done every two to three weeks

Micropeel Plus 20 or 30

About: Formulated with a combination of salicylic acid 20 or 30 percent, which refines pores and helps reduce the appearance of acne, and glycolic acid 3 percent, which aids in improvement of rough texture, blotchiness and uneven skin tone

Downtime: One week

Glow Peel Package

About: The glow includes a customized blend of Jessner’s Solution and 30 percent salicylic acid in a series of three treatments that will create a light slough of the skin and give you a desirable glow. This package includes a brightening and exfoliating cream, which will help reduce the side effects.

Downtime: Minimal

Recommendation: Three treatments done every two weeks

Pigment Balancing Peel

About: A customizable peel targeting hyperpigmentation and photo-damaged skin with the use of Vitamin C, Emblica, Glycolic 40 percent, and citric acid 10 percent

Downtime: Light to moderate peeling may occur.

Three-Step Stimulation Peel

About: An exclusive blend of acids that remove the outermost layers of skin, stimulate deeper skin layers for more profound benefits and stimulate cellular function

Downtime: Light to moderate peeling may occur

Recommendation: The peel can be repeated every four weeks.

TCA Chemical Peel

About: This is a medium-depth peel formulated with Trichloracetic acid and Jessners Solution to resurface the skin.

Downtime: One week

Recommendation: This treatment targets acne scarring, photo damage, and fine lines and wrinkles and creates cellular turnover.

One of the most common questions I get asked in schools is whether I dropped the soap in the shower. Heres an extremely graphic video about prison rape I made with The Other Side Productions, including scenes from Shawshank Redemption and American History X.

For distributing Ecstasy, I served almost six years in some of Arizona’s toughest jails. Rape was so common that I had to attend a rape class. Unsure what the class entailed, I joined dozens of prisoners in a room, facing a beat-up TV and CO3 Dunn, a burly staff member in plain clothes and wearing a cowboy hat. Prisoners started yelling: 

“What’s this crap?”

“It’s a rape pageant!”

“How many times have you been raped in the past month?”

“You can’t rape the willing, dog! We’re gonna get all the details about getting raped. They’re gonna show us a video and give us free rape kits.”

“Stun guns.”

“Tasers.”

“Knockout drops.”

“Chloroform.”

“Condoms.”

“Everyone shut the hell up!” CO3 Dunn banged his fist on a table. “This program is truly mandatory. They handed me the video and said, ‘Do it for everyone.’ P.R.E.A. stands for the Prison Rape Elimination Act. It covers inmates and staff, for whom there is zero tolerance for sexual assaults. Let’s get onto the video.”

The out-of-focus TV showed a round table of prisoners, a guard and a female warden. The first inmate – serving a sentence for a minor crime – described moving to an adult facility at seventeen. He was encouraged to drink alcohol brewed illegally in prison laced with psychotropic medication. He detailed getting gang-raped. His assailants tossed a coin to decide who owned him. The winner protected him in return for sex. The second inmate described how his neighbour hung himself after being raped. The next section was titled “What to watch for.” The video showed sweets left in a cell by rapists sat in a day room. A young inmate picked the sweets up, exited the cell, put them on a table and said, “I’m not interested.” The rapists looked defeated.

The classroom erupted with laughter.

“It’s the kind of people that laugh at this video that are most likely to commit sexual assaults!” CO3 Dunn yelled.

The video warned us not to take things from predators. Stamps. Coffee. Writing supplies. New prisoners should stay at the back of the chow line to avoid sitting in the wrong seat. They should stay away from gambling, drug debts, isolated areas, and have friends watch their backs.

CO3 Dunn paused the video. “If you don’t have the heart to help someone out, you’re an animal not a man, including staff. If it was your sister or brother, you’d help. I remember a youngster, scared as hell, fresh out of juvenile hall. The fellas were wrestling with him. I told him, ‘You need to stop those guys putting the body bump to you.’ He said, ‘They’re just playing.’ He was a bitch within two days. They turned him out. It doesn’t matter how big or bad you think you are, four or five guys can hold anybody down. No one is immune. Any sex is now classed as rape, willing or unwilling, with prisoners or staff. Prisoners will be prosecuted, and staff will be fired and prosecuted for rape.”

A prisoner raised his hand. “What if you get caught having sex with yourself? Is that rape?”

Ignoring the question, CO3 Dunn restarted the video, which showed a hungry new arrival accepting food from a predator. He had to repay the debt with oral sex.

The class laughed and howled.

The predator told the new arrival that he was preventing others from hurting him, but if the oral stopped, the protection would end. The new arrival continued the oral. The next scene showed a predatory guard ordering an inmate to clean an isolated area, and raping him.

The video returned to the roundtable, where an inmate urged rape to be reported and concern forms filled out. The female warden urged victims not to destroy the physical evidence. “Don’t shower, brush your teeth or use the bathroom.” A prisoner stated that rape can turn a five-year sentence into the death penalty by diseases such as AIDS.

“What are you gonna do if sexually assaulted?” CO3 Dunn asked.

“Shank the rapist!”

“Then you’re gonna go to lockdown. Predators need to be off the yard. Personally, I think they should be hung by their dicks until dead, but that’s not the way to go in here. Report it!”

Everyone mocked the ridiculousness of reporting anything.

“Report it to who?”

“Me,” CO3 Dunn said.

“And suffer the consequences. Getting shanked for being a snitch? It’s a no-win situation.”

“I understand there’s pressure on snitches, but reporting is the only way to get rapists prosecuted. This isn’t a trivial matter. Would you like it if a new prisoner came in today and got raped?”

“He’d better become a man overnight.”

“You guys need to back him up. Someone needs to talk to me. It’s the only way to create a safe environment for all of us. OK. Class dismissed.”

Sadly, after the class, a young mentally-ill inmate was gang-raped and put in lockdown for his own protection. No one reported anything.

Spring is on its way in and sweaters, scarves and mittens are on the way out. The temperature is rising, but that doesn’t mean the beard trend is going anywhere. Although this manly fashion staple has been around for quite some time, the art of growing and maintaining facial hair hasn’t always come as easy for some as it has for others. The amount of time it takes for a cleanly shaven face to sprout a full beard varies for every man, but the average is about four weeks. Take note of these tips for growing a beard from the beginning to ending stages.

Ingrown Hairs

Sometimes known as razor bumps, ingrown hairs will sometimes occur in the beginning stage of growth when hair gets trapped inside the follicle or grows back into the skin. This will occur after your initial shave before you start growing out your beard. It is common, but very painful and uncomfortable. Be careful when treating the irritated area. Don’t pull it out from the top, as that can cause it to break instead of come out, which will create more irritation. Instead, put a hot, damp towel over your face, disinfect the area with some alcohol and use tweezers to gently pull out the hair as close to the base as possible to pull the bulb out. Don’t ever squeeze them with your fingers! Dirt under your fingernails could lead to an infection. 

Itchiness

Don’t stress. This should only last a couple of weeks. If you’re new to growing out your facial hair, this initial stage can be uncomfortable and will make you feel like you’ve got a rash under all of that stubble. Don’t worry! It’s most likely just your face drying out and collecting dust. Apply some lotion to your face daily, and you’ll be good to go. Remember, that annoying itch is only temporary!

Growing Pains

Like I mentioned before, the amount of time it takes to grow a beard is different for everyone. Be patient and avoid trimming or shaping your beard for at least a month. For some men that’s too long, and for others it takes two months to get rid of that patchy look. Use your best judgment, but avoid the clippers for as long as you can!

Grooming

When you’ve achieved your desired beard length, which should be after a month or so, you should start a beard grooming routine. You’ll experience the best results by shampooing and conditioning your beard a couple of times a week. Most guys use their regular bar soap in the shower, but you shouldn’t! It will dry out the skin underneath your beard and cause the hair to be brittle.

Trim your beard every week to every few weeks, depending on how long you want to keep your beard and the speed at which your hair grows. When trimming or shaping your beard, always use the right tools. For trimming full, thick beards, comb your beard before using shears. Some men prefer to use scissors, while others prefer to use electric trimmers with a high guard. For a more scruffy, stubble look, use a stubble trimmer every couple of days and an after-shave moisturizer afterward.

Heres a court document showing that Ken Kratz allegedly forced himself sexually on one of his multiple victims:

On the sexual assault charge filed by the lawyer Thomas Basting, Kratz never spent a day in prison. The charges were negotiated down, so that he would only have a four months license suspension and a fine of $23,904.10, with the sexual assault left out of the conviction. Kratz basically played the system by blaming his addiction, and resumed practicing law. To avoid paying the fine, he filed bankruptcy.

"Kratz has rationalized his poor behavior by confessing to various addictions: to Ambien, to Vicodin, to Xanax, and to sex, though he fails to point to either medical records or expert medical testimony that would explain the exact nature and severity of his conditions, or how they may have affected his ability to conform his behavior to ethical rules."

The court bargaining process is like negotiating a deal for a used car. Over time, the defendant usually agrees to a penalty provided the most serious charges are dropped. Technically, the sexual assault remains an allegation only, but that doesnt mean it didnt happen.

Finger pointers are often the ones doing the stuff they accuse others of. Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey were accused of sexual assault by Kratz. They are serving time for something they didnt do, whereas Kratz is a free man, enjoying the limelight of media interviews and planning on writing a book.
